Footsteps sound up the stairs, each one louder than the last as they get closer. Trying my best to calm my breathing, I cover my mouth with my hand when I realize it’s not one of The Sinners because they would have called out. Silent tears fall down my cheeks when I realize it’s someone I don't want it to be.
I squeeze my eyes shut as the door creaks open and they enter, their heavy breathing the only thing that can be heard.
“Nova,” he breathes.
He chuckles darkly, moving deeper into the room.
“Come out, come out wherever you are?” Biting my hand, I force myself to not make a sound. He moves around the room, his footsteps getting louder as he does.
“Mmmm,” he breathes.
A tremor moves through me as I see his shadow on the wall.
My heart is pounding through my chest and I’m almost certain he can hear it.
“Nova?” I flinch at his voice and a gasp escapes me. Knowing he heard me, I slam my eyes shut pressing my lips together trying my best to be invisible. A loud crash rips through the room.
“Gotcha,” he shouts and without warning he grabs my arm, ripping me from behind the cabinet.
Screaming with all my might, I slap and punch him as hard as I can. Kicking my leg out, I aim for between his legs and with one swift kick I connect with his balls. Grunting, he drops my arm and I run.
I don't look back, I don't stop, I keep running.
I’m down the stairs, out the door and across the clearing when he shouts.
“You fucking bitch. I’m going to enjoy gutting you.” My lungs are screaming for air, my chest is burning, my legs feel numb, but I don’t stop. He gives chase and with everything I have I run, he’s gaining on me fast but I’m not about to let him catch me.
He can’t catch me.
Headlights up ahead urge me to go faster. Coming to a screaming halt, the doors open and with the engine still running Cass and Jordy run at me just in time.
“Nova?” Cass shouts.
“What the fuck?” Jordy screams. I crash into Cass’ chest breathing heavily as I force air into my lungs.
“He’s here,” I cry.
“Who?” Jordy hisses.
“Miller,” I cry again.
Fuck.Seeing Nova running toward us with fear etched across her face, her entire body shaking, confirmed our worst nightmare: she wasn’t alone. Her knuckles turn white with the death grip on Cass’ shirt. Holding her tightly, Cass reaches forward and grips her chin, steering her face to his. “Pup, breathe, it’s okay we’re here,” he tells her calmly. She nods rapidly as if she’s only just realizing she’s safe.
“I’ll go check it out, don’t fucking let her out of your sight,” I say, my voice gruff.
I wanted to spank her for even sneaking out without at least one of us. She knew the dangers that lurked around and still fuck, I was so angry at her, but thankful she was okay.
These last few days had been chaos, a turn of events we never saw coming, but now Miller was back and he obviously had unfinished business with Nova.
Glancing toward them, Nova has her lip caught between her teeth. Cass ushers her toward the truck, buckling her in before he goes to the driver’s side.
She was safe, that’s all that matters.
I was due to meet my parents soon, fairly certain they’d stand me up.
I search behind the clearing, not seeing any sign of Miller. Moving further into the clearing, I head toward Nova’s house. The walk is quiet, the only noise is the voice in my head.
My head steadily thumps as I make the walk toward Nova’s. I come to a standstill when I spot the police commissioner’s car pulling up.
