Hiding behind a tree, I watch as Commissioner Jackson gets out looking over the house before he takes the few steps toward the door. Growing unsure of what’s about to transpire, my eyebrows raise when the door opens and Miller stands greeting him.

What the fuck? Why are they at Santonio’s house?

My phone vibrates in my pocket, ignoring it, I continue watching as they talk. Miller begins to get agitated, and doing his best to calm him down, Commissioner Jackson gestures inside and together they enter, closing the door behind them. Was the commissioner in on Santonio’s death? Does his meeting with Miller have something to do with Nova? I have a sneaky suspicion this isn’t some coincidence. My phone vibrates again, groaning I pull it out, and seeing my father’s name across the scene, I hit ignore and see the time reads.1:05PM.

Shit, they actually showed up. Sending him a text I simply say.

Jordy

On my way.

I’ll fill the guys in after I get back. Sending Cass a text, I let him know I’ll be back later.

Jordy

Meeting with my parents, I’ll fill you in later just keep Nova close.

Cass

Okay, talk later. Good luck.

I almost laugh because I know he’s being supportive, but things with my parents never go well, things with them always get dirty. I’d been avoiding them for as long as I could, now, I knew whatever they wanted meant bad news, it always did.

My father sits with his back to me, rubbing his hand over my mother’s shoulder like he’s consoling her. That’d be a first, he was always a man who used his hands for things much worse. He never touched me, but my mother always made excuses for him.

Spotting me, my mother stands abruptly, a smile graces her face, for once she doesn’t look pale or sickly. Guess things could be worse.

“Jordan.” She smiles with glee.

“Didn’t think you’d show?” my father grumbles. Looking over at my mother, I frown. Looking at her more closely, I can tell her smile is forced, her lips are tight, and she appears to be shaking.

Great, she’s fucking coming down from something. Guess I was wrong.

“Got caught up,” I simply tell my father. He grunts then reaches for his back pocket. My fingers automatically touch the gun I have hidden behind my back.

“Relax,” My father grumbles, knowing I always carry, and holds out a huge envelope.

Raising my eyebrow, I wait.

My mother takes a step forward, reaching her hands out for me.

“Jordan. My baby.” She glances at my father then back toward me, letting her, she takes my hands in hers. Her thumb circles across my hand, my mother has never touched me like this, she’s never shown any sort of care toward me at all. What the fuck is going on?

“I’m sorry, you couldn’t save her.” She swallows.

Forcing my eyes to the ground, I take a moment to breathe, clenching my teeth, my voice is husky and rough when I spit out, “It should have been me.”

Because it should have, the fire had started in my room, my sister had crawled into my bed waiting for me, like she often did of a night.

“We came to warn you.” My father states.

My eyebrows dip frowning, I question, “Warn me, about what?”

“You’re in trouble,” my father says.

“What?” I question.

“We haven’t got time to explain, we just need you to be safe. It's our fault, all of it, and we’re sorry we dragged you into this. We made a deal and it backfired, now we’re stuck and they refuse to back down.”
