Page 22 of We End With Us

Clearly agitated after his meeting with his parents, Jordy begins pacing the room, holding the bottle between his fingers before he turns around but then spins back around. “Oh, get this,” he says, chuckling to himself while he shakes his head.

“Commissioner Jackson and Miller are up to something.”

“What?” Cass and I bark at the same time.

My brows dart together wondering what the hell Jordy witnessed.

“He pulled up just as I got to Nova’s place and Miller opened the door for him. He seemed agitated about something, then they went inside.”

“Fuck,” Bass snaps behind me.

Miller was still in Nova’s house? What the fuck is he up to?

“So,” Nova hesitates for a second, worrying her lip between her teeth, she peeks up at Jordy from under her thick lashes.

“What does that mean?” she finally asks.

“You don't go anywhere alone,” I state. Nova’s eyes are wide as she looks around at us, Bass comes back to the table taking the only spare seat, next to me.

“But.”

“No, pup, no fucking buts. Miller could have seriously hurt you today. You do remember he wants to, right?” Cass bites, I nod when Nova looks to me.

“B-but—” she begins.

“Princess, Miller nearly had you alone. Do you understand what he could have done?” I stress.

Nova begins to pick at her nails, finally glancing at me she closes her eyes momentarily and drags in an exaggerated breath.

“But I want to see Vicki, and I need to organize my father’s things, and—” She stops, taking a breath. Cass places his hand over her back, rubbing in circles while she takes deep breaths.

“It’s too fucking dangerous, mamas. I’m going to rip Miller limb from limb so if he wants to prevent that he’ll stay away.” Bass’ gaze cuts to me then back to Nova.

“Are you joking?” Nova asks Bass.

Raising an eyebrow, Bass frowns. “Do I sound like I’m joking, mamas?”

“One thing you should know, Nova, when it comes to your safety I don’t joke,” he continues, trying to hide his irritated tone with her.

She sighs and shrugs. “Fine, so we go back to old times, with you guys following me around.”

“Yep,” Bass says matter of fact. Pure frustration seeps from Nova as she glares at Bass.

“I won’t risk you getting hurt, not when we can protect you, princess.” I huff out a breath, trying to hold myself together. She can hate us all she wants. As long as she’s safe I don't care.

Miller is deranged and out for her, she has no chance against him.

“I want to find out who killed my father,” she states, folding her arms across her chest. As if she thinks we’ll give in so easily.

She’s not giving in and I’m proud of her for standing her ground, but we’re not about to play detective especially when there are so many loose ends concerning Nova.

We still have one burning question to find out.

Who’s been the one leaving Nova the notes and why have they been quiet?

I hadn’t letNova out of my sight, too afraid she’d try to run off again. The girl was seriously testing all our patience. I knew she wanted answers, we all did, but trying to play the hero wouldn’t get her them, but our girl wasn’t exactly known for following the rules.

“Can’t we go out, like outside?” Nova pouts. Smiling over at her, dropping the book I was reading, I decide distracting her is the best option.
