Page 27 of We End With Us

Her fingers dig into my arm as she holds me tightly as if she’s afraid I’ll be gone if she lets go.

“It's time we talked,” King says. Lifting my head I watch as he, Jordy and Cass all enter the room each taking a place on the bed.

It shifts with their added weight, but Nova keeps her head down, her hand firmly on my arm.

Cass' fingers wrap around Nova's ankle; she doesn't move or even glance at any of us, she just lays there, tears sliding down her face.

Cass sighs. “Look, I know you've been cooped up here living with us and our fucking bullshit. You witnessed your dad being murdered, your so called friend held a gun to your head, and the man you've known like family since you were little also wants you dead for some fucking reason. Oh, and let’s not forget the fucking psycho who’s still out that’s obsessed with you.” Cass’ words force us all to shut our eyes. He’s right, and right now she doesn’t want to be near us. But fuck we're not letting her out of our sight.

Nova sits up, wiping her face which has been left red from her crying, her eyes are puffy and she suddenly looks exhausted.

“I’m sorry,” King murmurs softly. Nova nods knowing we've probably said that word a lot this week; it sounds like it's pointless at this stage.

King eyes me, knowing whatever it is between us is building, I can't deny it any longer I know.

“King,” I voice.

“Don't,” he says. Knowing he’s not ready to admit out loud about himself, or us for that matter, tears at me.

All eyes are on us, the undeniable tension building even more.

“What is with you two?” Jordy questions.

“Nothing,” King snaps, and it's enough to let me know whatever I thought we had is futile.

Putting my own feelings aside I wrap an arm around Nova, needing her close.

“I deserve to know,” Nova says.

“You're right you do,” King says, sighing. Grabbing her hand in his, he threads their fingers together. I watch as his tongue wets his lips, the movement having a sudden effect on me.

“I lied about Santonio because I was afraid I'd lose everything and I was too afraid to admit the truth,” King says.

“That's all I want,” Nova mutters.

“I was so afraid of losing you all that I never considered what my actions might cause,” he says, running his hand across Nova’s thigh, and I watch as his fingers dance across before he stops, stilling as his gaze finds mine.

“The truth is …” I begin. Nova's gaze penetrates mine. “I'm not sure who I am.” Confusion mares all their faces before I continue.

“My parents used my brother and me to lure kids. They'd kidnap them and sell them, giving the rich scum of the world whatever they desired.

It wasn't until before I left that I found out.” I close my eyes, the memories too much.

“Bass,” Nova's soft voice breaks through the onslaught of pain.

“I don’t feel like I belong, I have no clue who I really am because …”

Moving away from Nova, I stare out the window, knowing they're all waiting for an explanation. “My parents murdered my real family. I was only little when it happened, but my father took joy in letting me know he’d taken me.”

“Bass.” Nova's arms wrap around me from behind, her cheek rests on my back while she holds me.

“I don’t even remember if Sebastian is my real name.” My chest tightens down on my lungs, the air around me seems to evaporate.

Nova moves before my entire body goes rigid when two strong arms wrap around me from behind.

“Bass, calm down. Your name doesn’t matter,” King says into my ear.

“My entire life I've never felt welcome until I met you guys and then when it all turned out to be a lie.” I push from King’s grasp needing space from him, “I wanted this so fucking bad and then it all blew up in my face. Now they’re back and I-I.” I begin to shake, my entire body feels disconnected from me.
