Page 28 of We End With Us

“Hey.” King grabs my face between his hands, with my breaths stuttering faster, I lean into him for support. Tremors run through my body, each feeling more violent than the last.

“We won’t let them hurt you,” he promises. King’s jaw is rigid, his palms tighten across my face, his body pressed against mine.

“You can't protect me, not from them,” I stammer. My parents have worked with some of the most dangerous people, I know what's coming.

“Bass, look at me,” King demands when my gaze falls between us. “Look at me,” he growls.

My gaze connects with his.

“You are one of us, you are family.”

“We protect our own,” Cass says. Jordy nods agreeing with both of them.

“My father he won’t—” I swallow.

“He won't,” King assures me.

“Fuck,” Jordy mutters.

“I thought my life was fucked up.” We all look toward him.

“I think my parents are involved in something and I’m afraid of what that means for me.” Jordy swallows, his jaw tense.

“Care to explain?”Cass catches my gaze, he’s taken a step forward.

Now that Bass has calmed, I know I need to tell them. Even if I keep that part to myself a little longer.

“They warned me, I was so angry at them I didn’t check. But they warned me”

“Warned you about what?” King questions.

“Said I was in danger and all the answers were in—”

“The envelope,” King says, forcing each of us downstairs where the envelope sits on the table where I chucked it earlier.

They said the answers were in here.

“Whatever’s inside, know it doesn't change anything,” Cass says, placing his hand on my arm as I reach for the envelope. Famous last words because once they all find out who my parents worked for nothing will be the same.

My parents double-crossed him, and they've been on the run ever since. After the night my sister died, everything fell. My father made an enemy and now he has become mine.

I nod because just like Bass my life is a complete fucking mess. Whatever’s inside may just be my undoing.

My finger shakes as I slide it under the slot to open it.

Holding my breath, I slowly pull out the contents. Reading over the first piece of paper, I’m in utter disbelief when Nova steps toward me placing her hand over my arm.

Fuck, no. My stomach churns as I read what’s inside. No fuck, it can’t be.

“Jordy? What is it?” she asks, looking over the paper. Her soft gasp feels like it's piercing through my ears.

“They were working with the commissioner?” she whispers.

Did my parents kill Santonio?

“No, no, no,” she mutters, stepping away from me.

“Nova, wait.”
