Page 30 of We End With Us

My father warned me that I was in danger, and I see a note attached to a picture with the words.

‘Get out’

It’s our old place on the night of the fire. Everything is destroyed and there’s a photo of Mia attached from the police files. Nothing makes sense, no clue as to what my parents are supposedly involved in.

I should have ended them a long time ago, but I never thought I could. Until now. Until Nova.

“Talk,” Cass says, taking a seat access from me, Bass and King join us as I show them the image.

“Who’s this?” King asks, eyeing the photo of one of the most dangerous men in America.

“Fucking hell, no,” Bass groans. He swallows deeply as he eyes the image.

“You know who this is?” King asks him, and he simply nods.

“Who?” Cass questions us both.

“Someone my parents fucked over.” Bass sighs.

“What do you mean?” Cass asks him.

“They were hired to do a job but they didn’t, instead, they stole and ran,”

“Fuck.” I grunt, knowing if it leads back to Bass or me, all of us are dead. You didn’t cross Nicco Demetrius and continue breathing.

I wakeup sometime later with King watching me from the corner. His feet are propped up on the bed, cockiness still firmly in place. Guess he can’t help it.

“Sleep okay?” he asks me. I simply nod, I slept as well as anyone whose world has been rocked could.

“The arrangements for your father’s funeral have been made,” he tells me when I sit up. I simply nod again not wanting to go into detail.

“He was the mayor, Nova, so the whole town will be there.” Knowing the whole town would be in attendance is enough to make me want to hide away.

But my father was the mayor afterall and his death was unforeseen, I just wanted his killer caught.

My eyes trail back and forth over King. Leaning forward, his fingers wrap around my ankle, pulling himself closer as he watches me.

“Are you and Bass okay?” I ask because I've noticed a drift between them, ever since King got back Bass has been different. I know they’re hiding something. I can feel it, I’m just afraid of what it is.

“We’ll be fine, princess, just let us worry about you,” he says, standing up before he comes toward me, crawls over to take a place beside me, and looks over at me smiling.

“I missed you,” I tell him, tracing my finger across his jawline. King’s eyes close at my touch before his hand lifts covering mine.

“Missed you too, princess.”

My heart thumps remembering that night. “I thought I’d lost you.” Briefly his eyes lift, swimming with emotion. “I’ll always be yours, princess,” he says softly.

King always has a way to make me feel like he only sees me, that no matter what was said before, I’m it.

“Do you think my father suffered?” I ask, tears welling up as I think of his last moments.

King sighs, looking toward the door his jaw ticks as if he’s trying to find the right words.

“I think he went fast,” he says, looking at me.Fast?

“That it all happened so fast that there wasn’t time for his brain to register what was happening,” he tells me.

“Why do you think Carter and Miller want me dead?”
