Clenching my fist by my side and trying my best to not let my father’s words destroy what I've worked so hard to control, I do my best to not let him have it, and I take a deep breath.

“I’m busy. What do you need?” Their phone calls have been more consistent. Usually, I ignore them, and they go away for another few months, but with her anniversary coming up I know exactly why they're calling.

They do this every year.

“Your mother wants to see you, it's important.”

“Then why didn’t she call me?” I say, sounding like an irritable child.

“You know how she gets around this time, Jordan. It's hard for her.” Unable to help the scoff that escapes me, my entire body becomes agitated.

“Hard for her. Are you fucking serious? She’s dead because of both of you, and you want me to forget. Forget what you put us through, what you had me do.” Anger builds inside me, and it takes everything to not erupt on my father.

A lone tear slides down my cheek. I'm about to let my father have it when I feel two arms wrap around me from behind. Nova leans her cheek on my back, calming me in an instant. Fuck, how does she do that?

I close my eyes for a brief moment.

“I’ll meet you at her spot tomorrow at one P.M. Don't be late or I will walk away.” Hanging up, I try my best not to let Nova see the anger in me before I turn around and wrap her in my arms.

“Jordy, who’s the her you were talking about?”

Fuck, I’m not sure I’m ready for Nova to hear about that side of me. Not yet.

Not when things have been so fucking perfect.

Cass pulls me against him.My cheeks are stained with tears, and I can’t accept that he’s gone, that they’re both gone.

“Can’t it fucking wait?” Bass’ voice comes out all gravelly as if he’s holding back. I lift my head from Cass’ chest as Commissioner Jackson steps inside.

“Nova.” He dips his head at me, letting his hands fall to his sides.

“She doesn’t need this right fucking now,” Bass growls. Cass sighs. “Bass, enough.” Cass lifts me from his chest and stands to move between Bass and Jackson.

Jordy walks into the room to see what the commotion is about. He crosses his arms across his chest when he sees Jackson.

“I’m sorry about your father,” he says.

I doubt he is, but I nod, accepting his condolences anyway.

“I need to ask you some questions pertaining to his”— he swallows, staring at his feet—“murder.”

“You were all there that night?” Raising his eyebrows he looks around at the guys, his words may not say it but it’s clear what he’s thinking.

Bass scoffs. “Of course you blame us. I mean, why not.”

“Bass.” Cass growls. Forcing Bass to look at him, he gives him a look, and Bass strides quickly from the room, throwing his hands up as he does.

“Look, we don't know anything,” Cass tells him. “And Nova certainty doesn’t need questions the days after.” He eyes him with annoyance.

“I understand, and I'm truly sorry, Nova, but in order to find out who did it we need to ask these questions.

“Are you questioning the entire town or just us?” Jordy snaps.

“Excuse me?” Jackson bites.

Jordy pushes off the wall he was leaning against and walks toward Cass and the commissioner.

“I mean, Bass is right. Go after the most obvious, right?” Jordy hisses.
