“Look, we just lost our fucking friend.” Cass’ eyes drift to the floor, then lift, catching my gaze.

“Look, I understand who you boys are and who the mayor was, but when it comes down to it, someone murdered the mayor. They may very well be after Nova next. We need to find the killer.” Jackson grits his teeth.

“Maybe try Miller or Carter. I mean, have you found them yet? They kidnapped Nova. Held a gun to her head and threatened her,” Jordy says.

“We’re searching,” Jackson says. Jordy lets out a fake laugh.

“Right, searching.” Shaking his head, he takes a seat beside me on the couch.

Could he be right? Could they be coming for me next?

“You up for it, pup?” Cass asks me. I nod slowly because it’s pointless putting it off. I want them to find who killed my father.

“On the night, did your father seem different?”

Frowning, I ask, “Different how?”

“Did it seem like he was worried or perhaps out of sorts?” I shake my head because I’m not really sure.

“No,” I murmur. “I was angry at him.”

“Carter wanted revenge. He said my father killed the woman he loved and I was the perfect revenge.”

The commissioner's eyes widen slightly before he begins to frown. He doesn’t respond at first, flicking through his notepad before his gaze finds mine again.

“Did you see anything suspicious last night?” I shake my head.

Jackson looks between us all. “Is there anything you remember that might help?”

“Not that I can think of. My father and I had been fighting. He came once he knew Carter had me and then he was just gone.” A sob escapes me as I think of my father.

“Okay, thank you, Nova. I know you didn't hurt your father.” His gaze flicks to Cass then Jordy then he turns and walks out leaving us all staring after him completely confused.

Jordy’s mouth drops open. “He fucking thinks we did it.” He looks at me then back at Cass.

“I know you didn’t,” I whisper before curling my feet under me. Jordy leans across me wrapping his arms around me just as Bass walks back into the room. I slide my tongue over my lower lip, my gaze bouncing between them.

“We need to be careful,” Cass says, eyeing Jordy and Bass.

“Why, because the fucker suspects us?” Bass grits out.

“Bass, you know we have to be careful okay. King—”

“King’s not fucking here is he?” Bass snaps, swallowing hard before he walks back out of the room, the back door slams in his absence.

Cass sighs. Moving toward me, he takes his place beside me again letting me rest my head on his chest.

“It’s just an adjustment,” Cass says, staring ahead.

Jordy and I share a look before I lift my hand, tracing my finger across Cass' jaw.

Chaos has erupted under us, and I know without a doubt more is to follow. I just hope I don’t sink under it.

I knewwith every day that passed it would be harder to move on because I was holding onto a secret, one I couldn’t tell the others just yet, we needed to be sure.

Fuck, it was so hard.

Knowing what Nova’s been through and what's still to come, I can’t escape the endless exhaustion of feeling lost. There was no doubt that once everything came out she’d feel differently about us, about me. I didn’t want to lose her, but knowing the secrets we still held close to us there was no way she'd understand why we chose to keep them from her.
