Page 50 of We End With Us

“Well, King isn’t the boss of me,” I snap, folding my arms across my chest.

“Oh, but I think I am, princess.” King’s voice from behind startles me. Spinning around, I clasp my hand to my chest. My heart is racing a million miles a minute.

“You can’t do that?” I say as King takes three very large steps forward.

“Do what, princess?” he asks, smiling, raising his hand before he softly runs it across my jawline.

Smacking his hand away, I growl, “Sneak up on people.”

King chuckles, walking past me as Jordy walks in at the same time Bass comes from outside.

“Are you trying to punish us with that outfit, princess?” King asks, lifting an eyebrow staring down at the shirt that is in fact barely covering my lower half. Shrugging, I walk past him deliberately reaching for a mug on the higher shelf.

A series of groans erupt from behind me, and a soft smile graces my lips as I continue to make myself a cup of coffee.

“Mamas, I came in here with every intention of having a serious conversation, but now all I can think about is bending you over and taking you from behind,” Bass says, groaning.

“Why, what's wrong?” King barks.

“It’s just, nothing, it can wait,” Bass says, looking over my shoulder at him. King catches his hand, forcing him to stop in front of him before he uses his fingers to lift Bass’ chin.

“Talk to me,” King demands.

Bass looks away and I already know whatever he has to say is painful for him.

“Bass?” I breathe out, turning to face them.

Bass gnaws on his bottom lip, I fight the urge to go to him. My brows pinch together when Bass stares over at me.

My heart clenches. A roaring begins in my head, my stomach begins to twist in knots.

“Bass?” Tears sting my eyes waiting for him to open his mouth.

“I’m sorry, Nova.” He swallows.

“We had no choice, I had to, to survive.” Tears slide down Bass’ face as the others move around us, the air feels like it’s been sucked from the room as Bass pulls something from his pocket.

It’s a single piece of paper. Bass holds the piece of paper tightly in his grasp. I swallow hard, my eyes flick between the guys.

“Bass?” Cass questions, snatching the paper from his fingertips.

Cass blinks before handing it to King, who clenches his jaw before Jordy takes it.

They all look at me, tears slide down my face, too afraid to look, I just stand there.

Cass takes his place beside me, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

“You need to read, pup.” He gestures to Jordy to hand him the paper.

Jordy looks at me, a crestfallen expression in place before handing it to Cass.

Holding it out to me, I slowly take it from Cass. Closing my eyes briefly, I drop my gaze to my hand and the scribbled handwriting. Confusion mares my face before I take a seat to read what looks like a letter.

Bass,

If you’re reading this letter then I'm gone. Know I didn't want to go, but I had no choice. It was me or her. You know we always choose her.

We always kept her safe, didn't we? They promised if we helped them she’d be safe.
