Bass appears in front of me, he rips his gaze from mine and shakes his head. The anguish in his eyes is clear.
“I-I know you, don’t I?” I whisper breathlessly.
Bass nods.
“We were kids.”
“Mack was older, you came to us when you were six. Santonio isn’t your real father, Nova,” Bass tells me.
My tears wet my cheeks as Bass moves his thumb along trying to catch them all.
“Why keep this from me?” I ask him.
“Because if you knew the real truth, you’d remember who I was, who I used to be.” He looks away, ashamed.
“I-I don’t remember anything, Bass, nothing. How is that possible?”
“Sometimes when people have suffered a trauma at a young age their mind finds ways to block it out,” King says, shifting his gaze from me to Jordy who looks away.
“My parents were horrible people, Nova. They hurt people, kids, they’re sick and they’re coming for me. I’m next.”
“What?” King barks angrily, grabbing Bass’ arm.
“I’ve been holding onto that letter since we found Mack, and to this because it holds all the answers,” Bass says, moving his hand into his pocket and pulling out a necklace.
Placing it in my palm, Bass steps back watching me.
Holding it up I search for answers, trying to figure out what it is I’ve lost.
“I-I,” I stammer, shaking my head. I can’t remember, was it significant to me?
“Nova?” Cass breathes.
Looking over at him, he tilts his head assessing me.
A full-body tremble racks my body when a flash enters my mind.
A little girl spinning around laughing.And then it’s gone.
“Why does this hold all the answers?” I ask quietly.
Bass narrows his eyes before looking at the others, then back to me.
“Because the man Santonio killed that night, in the woods, was your brother.”
