A gasp escapesNova as the bomb that Bass just dropped on her settles in.
“I-I had a brother?” Nova asks.
Bass nods. “He gave you that when you were a kid, you never took it off.”
Fuck, knowing we buried her brother’s body that night now made this the worst possible thing we could have ever done. When we said he was a nobody that was a lie because he was somebody, somebody searching for Nova. He’d found her but he found Santonio too.
“My parents kidnapped you both. He was two years older and fought them at every turn. He tried to get you both out, but you fell really sick, and he couldn't take you. Mack and I promised we’d take care of you, we kept our promise.”
“Wait,” I say.
“When you were looking for stuff from my father what did you really need?”
“We were hoping he had something on you about the day he bought you,” Bass says, screwing his face up at his last words.
“He bought me?” she repeats.
King nods.
“You were a means to an end, Nova. But in the end, I think he really cared for you,” I tell her.
“Why did he kill my mother? why would he care ?” she asks.
“Because she was still his wife and she betrayed him, Santonio didn't take that lightly.”
Her eyes fill with tears. Fuck we’re complete fucking assholes, how much more can she take?
Nova sniffs.
“So when I asked if there were any more secrets there was still this one?” she cries, wiping her hand across her nose.
We all nod because after everything we’d broken her trust, and I wasn’t really sure we’d ever get it back.
I drop my gaze to my feet, waiting for her explosion, but instead, she drops to her knees, then her bottom as she holds her head in her hands and cries.
We all surround her, touching her in some way. My hand rests over her head, holding her close to my own.
I was so sick of lying to her, fuck she deserved better, we’d completely betrayed her.
Bass reaches out his hand, linking his pinky with hers.
“Mamas, I promise you everything I ever did was to protect you.” Lifting her head Nova just stares at Bass.
“They won’t stop until they take me down, Nova,” he says, running his tongue over his lip.
“Do you mean it?” she asks.
“I fucking swear on my brother, on these guys, on everything I’ve ever loved, Nova, on you.” Bass breaks.
“I only wanted you to survive. After that night when you didn’t remember me, I knew it was for the best, but then everything happened and we, fuck I couldn’t stop it.”
“I didn't know you as anything more than one of The Sinners,” she tells him.
“I had the potential to ruin you, Nova, and all I wanted was to keep you safe, but I failed,” he says.
“You didn't fail, Bass. We didn't fail,” King states.
“They’re coming and there’s no telling what they’ll do to get what they want.”
