Page 58 of We End With Us

We all rush toward the door, Cass grips my arm, afraid to let me get too far away from him.

Commissioner Jackson stands on the porch, leaning against the doorframe, he smiles when he sees me.

“Argh, Nova. Good to see you’re finally home.” Two police officers stand right behind him along with three more in the front yard.

Knowing this man has been in my home without permission sends an eerie feeling inside me.

I want to ask him why he and Miller were in my home, but Cass senses it and squeezes my arm, forcing my gaze on his.

Stepping forward, I stand beside Bass. Jackson takes a step forward doing his best to intimidate Bass, who just raises his eyebrow at him.

“I’m afraid I have to arrest you, son,” he tells Bass.

“Like fuck,” King growls from behind us, pushing between Bass and I to come face to face with Commissioner Jackson.

“On what grounds?” King barks. He simply grins at King, bending to look past him at Bass.

“Murder,” he says, smiling at us like he’s taking pleasure in this moment.

My heart skips a beat, wondering why he thinks Bass murdered someone.

King laughs. “If you’re trying to pin the mayor’s murder on Bass, try a-fucking-gain.”

Letting out a heavy sigh, Commissioner Jackson just smiles. “Oh no, I know he had nothing to do with that, although we are close to figuring out who was involved. The murder I’m referring to is that of his father. He was found on the outskirts of town this morning, with your fingerprints all over the scene, Sebastian.”

Bass pales in shock. His entire body freezes, his eyes immediately dropping to his feet. Is this guilt he’s feeling? Did Bass really kill his father?

“Like fuck,” King snaps. “Bass was here all morning and then he went on a drive with me, we just got back.”

“Argh, an accomplice I see.” He smiles at King with a wide grin and then moves aside. “Arrest them both,” he barks at his men who grab Bass and King, slamming handcuffs on them before they drag them down the stairs.

“What the fuck?” Cass growls, following them. “You can't arrest them, you have no proof.”

“I have all the proof I need to send Sebastian right to jail. He’s just like his father, ruthless and a murder.”

Bass looks over his shoulder at me as they drag him away.

“Bass. King,” I shout. Commissioner Jackson places his hand on my shoulder.

“A little advice, Nova. I’d remove these boys from your life immediately. There’s no telling what they’re truly capable of. After all, their specialty is murder, right boys?” he says, not waiting for an answer as he gets into one of the cars.

Jordy, Cass, and I watch as they drive away with King and Bass in the backseat.

“Fuck,” Cass roars, slamming the door.

“What do we do?” I ask.

Jordy stands with his hands over his head, shaking his head while Cass paces the front foyer.

“There’s no way Bass killed him,” Jordy states.

“Is it so hard to believe he wouldn’t?” I say out loud. Jordy and Cass’ heads snap toward me, and I shrug. “What? Bass hated his father. How many times did he say he wanted both his parents dead? Now his father turns up and he’s been killed.”

“Nova, he’s been here, when would he have had a chance to find him let alone kill him?” Jordy asks me.

“I don’t know, I'm just saying, it could be possible.”

Cass sighs. “We need to get them out. I bet this is a part of Carter’s plan, split us up, leave us vulnerable, and Nova is easier to grab.”
