Page 59 of We End With Us

“Y-you think he’d do that just to get to me?” I ask Cass.

Jordy scoffs. “I think Carter would do whatever it takes to weaken us, weaken you.”

Cass nods agreeing with Jordy.

“They won't have enough proof, they’ll have to let them out. Jackson is bullshitting to split us up, but we can’t risk Carter or Miller or even fucking Grant getting to you, Nova.”

Wrapping my arms around my body I say, “What do we do?”

“We keep you safe no matter what,” Cass tells me, bringing me into his arms, and holding me to his chest. I listen to his breathing, his heart is racing so I know he’s worried. Would Carter really hurt me? Why is everything so messed up?

“We won’t let him take you, Nova?” Jordy says, wrapping his arm around my middle.

“Any of them?” Cass repeats.

But how could they promise me that? How could they keep me safe when everything seemed to be pulling us all further apart.

Whatever ending is planned for us may not be the one we all saw.

Fuck,shit, fuck.

I have no clue what just happened or even where to start getting both King and Bass out of jail. Jordy comforts Nova while I stand outside forcing myself to take some deep breaths to calm myself down. I’m so strung up, everything is falling apart, and I have no clue how to fix it. I draw in a deep breath, trying my best to calm down, there’s so much bullshit happening and no fucking way out.

Something in the distance catches my eye, at first I think I’m imagining things until I see it again. What the fuck? Moving across the lawn, I don’t hesitate to move toward it, if Grant thinks I’ll let him anywhere near Nova.

Pulling my gun from my back, I aim it toward what I can clearly see now is a silhouette of a man. Swallowing, I let out a breath. “You better move along, Grant, I won’t miss.” He chuckles, like he finds it amusing.

The man takes a step forward, the afternoon sun casting him in a glow. I clench my jaw, taking a few deep breaths as he comes into view.

“Who the fuck are you?” I demand as he takes another step forward.

“I’d put that down, kid. I don’t really want to hurt you, you remind me of my boys.”

Aiming my gun higher, I waste no time popping off a warning shot as the man lets out a wild chuckle like he’s finding this entire situation laughable.

“I’ll tell you what, kid, you put that down and I won’t kill you.”

“I asked who the fuck you were?” I snap. Dragging my eyes over the man, he appears to be in his fifties at least. He’s wielding a huge knife like he’s ready to carve an animal to pieces, and gut me like one in seconds.

Giving me a smile, he tells me, “You have something that belongs to us.”

“Like fuck I do. I don’t know you,” I state.

Giving me a lopsided smile, the guy continues to move forward.

“Don’t make me shoot you,” I warn him.

“Look, kid, I don’t want to hurt you, put the weapon down.”

“Nice try, old man.” I scoff.

“That girl in there.” My face falls when he mentions Nova.

“Stay the fuck away from her,” I growl.

He lifts his hands. “I don’t want to hurt her. Nova right? That's her name?” My nostrils flare when he says her name. “She’s important to us.”

Remembering the name on the certificate I mumble, “Thompson.”
