Page 63 of We End With Us

“I’m worried about Bass,” Jordy says.

“Me too,” I say. Bass has always been unhinged, we all have fuck we’re the goddamn Sinners, but after everything, I can slowly feel it all falling apart, and I’m not sure how much longer I can hold us all together, if one of us falls, we all fall.

I’ve keptmy distance from them, so frustrated that they can never seem to give me any answers, it’s never the truth, it's always a fabrication of it and I’m tired of being pushed aside for their pride, or male masculinity.

They've been on edge since Cass walked back inside last night. After hearing what I was positive was gunfire, I shot up to check, but Jordy watched out the window for a bit before he told me to sit back down. They were keeping something from me again.

Bass still hasn’t returned from the station, and I’m beginning to worry something is truly wrong. Why else would they still have him detained?

Doing my best to ignore their stares as I walk into the kitchen, their gazes follow me as I walk toward the fridge, grab a can of diet coke, and then turn to grab some crisps from the pantry. They know I'm frustrated yet always do something to distract me, and screw them for using it against me.

“Nova?” Cass says my name with a small dose of guilt.

My heart does that stupid fluttery thing in my chest when I turn and face them, each of them looking at me with concern.

“Come on, princess, you can’t ignore us forever,” King says, doing his best to hide his smile.

Taking a sip of my drink, I place it next to me on the bench before I flick my gaze to King.

“Baby girl,” Jordy says, sighing because I don't care what lies they are about to spill. Cass avoids my eyes and I don’t like it.

I aim my glare at all of them, refusing to crumble to their charisma.

“Sit, please,” King says, pushing the chair next to him out for me to take.

“We’ve got a problem?” I scoff, unable to control it from leaving my lips.

“I think Commissioner Jackson had something to do with your father's death,” King says.

“He’s not my father,” I say, knowing it’s childish but I'm over all the secrets coming out.

Crossing my arms across my chest, King eyes me from his side then continues, “He warned me to stay away, out of the business or more specifically, the Hale business.”

“What? Hale as in …?” Jordy states.

“Fuck,” Cass grumbles, wiping his hand across his face.

“Yep,” King retorts.

Cass sucks in a breath. “Do you think Bass is involved in something with his parents?”

King juts his chin out. “I have a feeling whatever it is, Bass has kept it a secret for a very long time because he never wanted us to find out.”

“So it's worse than him knowing Nova before any of this?” Jordy asks, throwing his hands in the air before placing them on the table in front of himself.

“I think so. Whatever Bass is hiding, I have a feeling it’s to do with you, Nova,” King says, twisting his head looking at me.

“Great, more secrets,” I say my eyes meeting his. My breath shudders from me when King lifts his hand brushing a strand of hair behind my ear before dropping it in front of him.

“I get you’re pissed, pup, you have every right.”

I laugh out loud, interrupting Cass, I stand before I scream, “Every right, of course I have every right. Everything I ever knew about myself is just gone, and I keep finding out more and more about you guys. I feel like I made a huge mistake, and for whatever reason I’m paying for something that my father did a long time ago. I feel like I’m a target and I don't know why.” I break, dropping to the floor on my knees, cradling my face in my hands, arms wrap around me holding me tightly.

“We need to go check out that storage unit in your father’s name. Maybe they’ll be answers there,” King says.

“I’m sorry, pup. I’m so fucking sorry,” Cass murmurs softly, rocking me back and forth, hugging me to his chest.

Hands grip my biceps. Lifting my head, my gaze connects with Kings.
