Page 66 of We End With Us

“Do you think it’s to do with the mafia?” Cass murmurs.

“I wouldn’t put it past him. But right now we need answers and we need to keep Nova safe,” King says.

They all look at me with concern or maybe it’s shame. My parents really fucked up. My entire life I’ve been running but they’ve forced me to take a stand. No one will take Nova, I’ll take out anyone who does because I’m a Hale and no one touches what’s mine, no-fucking-one.

I was sotired of my parents ruining my life. Of the secrets I'd had to hide to protect them, protect myself. When they took off, I was so fucking relieved.

But the one that hurt the most was my best friend lying to me. Bass was keeping something from us, all of us.

Something that could change us all. What was one more secret? One more lie, either way we’d come crashing down eventually.

Maybe we didn't have a happy ending, maybe Nova was a way to ensure we’d get some happiness. Carter and Miller wouldn’t stop, they weren’t going to let Nova go so easily.

Time’s running out and I wasn’t sure how much longer we could hide the fact that we were going to lose, regardless of what we did. I wasn’t going to go out without a fight, but knowing my ending is coming and denying it are two very different things.

Nova was meant for more.

Huffing out breath, Bass eyes me before his gaze lingers back to Nova, and Cass side eyes me before he too focuses back to Nova.

Nova’s lip trembles and I know right now she’s scared out of her mind, we’re all the cause of her pain, and our goddamn paths.

“Bass?” Nova’s voice cracks. His gaze drops to his knees and he gnaws his bottom lip before he finds her gaze again.

“Please, tell me what it is you know?” she pleads.

Bass rips his eyes from her once again. “Tell us,” I croak.

“I can’t,” he murmurs, dropping his head.

“Bass.” King’s voice is rough as he moves toward him, kneeling in front of him, he places his fingers under Bass’ chin forcing him to look into his eyes. We’d been trying to get Bass to tell us what it is he knew since he’d gotten back, but he’d been tight lipped.

“We deserve to know,” King says.

Shaking his head, Bass sniffs before he stands moving away from King.

“I can’t lose you,” he says, turning his back.

I watch a tear slide down Nova’s cheek before she swallows, doing her best to control her emotions.

“I can’t do this?” Nova whispers but we all hear her.

“Please leave,” she says before standing and leaving us in the middle of the lounge room while she heads upstairs.

Cass growls, moving after her.

“I said no, Cass, just leave me alone.” Nova’s shouts can be heard from upstairs.

She’d asked us to give her space, and we denied her that.

“She won't listen. I think it’s safe to say she’s reached her limit of lies,” he says, taking a seat across from me.

“Let's go,” King says. We all wear similar expressions when he begins to move through the house.

“I ain’t fucking leaving her,” Cass yells.

King grips Cass’ neck moving him into him. “We’re not, we’re just giving her the space she asked for that we ignored.” Cass nods and moves past King, while Bass and I follow behind them, closing the door. I make sure it’s locked before I finally walk down the steps, meeting the others at the truck.

“We drive down the road, give her some time,” King says, opening his door and jumping in, he starts the truck and waits until we all jump in before he drives off. Parking just down from the driveway, we sit and watch.
