“Girl, thank you for the job!” I send Jane an audio message as soon as I sit down behind the wheel. “Your brother just hired me!”
I enter the address of Anna’s school in my phone for directions, eager to meet her and hoping she has the exact opposite personality of her father.
Chapter Two
LOGAN
Thedayunfoldsaroundme without much of my notice because all I can focus on is the new nanny and howloudher entire personality is.
I call the school, all set. I call the dentist’s office to let them know that Anna will arrive with Joyce. I also call the resident security personnel where I live to let Joyce in when she gets there, and finally I call Mary, the maid and cook, to let her know about the new nanny.
Mary had been the maid, cook, and nanny all in one but with Anna now in school, it had become too much for one person.
Hence, the need for the new nanny, who is slowly driving me insane.
Joyce Athena. Beautiful name though.
I text Jane once I’m finished with the calls.
Just hired your friend.
I click send, then I focus on my next item of business. An entire neighborhood in Brooklyn is going up for sale, and the final vote on if we’re going to represent it or not is up to me.
Immediately Jane texts me back.
She already told me! Thank you.
I bite my lip then text her back.
You better be sure she is reliable.
Then I return to the briefing.
New messages come, but I don’t bother to look at them until I’m done with the briefing. When I look again, I discover that Joyce is sending me a torrent of texts.
Mr. Bardin?
This is Joyce!
I’m at Anna’s school!
Then less than 5 minutes after those, this was sent:
Just picked her up, she’s adorable! :D
We’re on our way to the dentist!
A pleased sound escapes me; at least I will know where Anna is at all times. After reading Joyce’s messages, I return my attention to Jane’s texts:
Logan, she is reliable.
She has a 12-year-old sister that she takes care of.
Plus, she was the best in all our classes.
I nod to myself as I read Jane’s messages and then quickly respond back.
That is good to hear. Does she always text this much?
