Daniel sits by my side, smiling at me with very white teeth. Even over the scent of pizza, I can tell he smells really good.

“You havebeautifulteeth!” I say, enthused, and Daniel laughs a hearty laugh that makes me laugh too.

“Thank you. Not a lot of people compliment teeth,” he says. “Your eyes are beautiful.”

“Thanks,” I say quietly, then turn my head straight forward, facing Jane and her pair.

They’re both into each other. I can tell by the body language, both entirely turned towards each other, his arm over her shoulders, and her hand touching his over the table.

If I were a betting woman, I’d say those two will be having sex by the end of the night.

“You’re not comfortable with me around you, are you?” Daniel’s voice reaches my ears again, and I turn to him, startled.

“It’s not that!” I shake my head emphatically. “You seem like an awesome guy, Daniel, but I’m seeing someone already. Jane is just insisting because she’s a drama queen.”

Daniel tilts his head back and widens his eyes in understanding. After taking in my words, he then nods, admitting defeat with class.

“He must be one hell of a lucky guy,” he says, smiling that beautiful smile.

“Oh no,” I wave him off. “I’m the lucky one in this!”

“If you say so.” He squeezes my hand and lets me be for the night.

Chapter Sixteen

LOGAN

MyblackLamborghiniisgetting known in Joyce’s neighborhood. When I park in front of the building, heads turn all over, and I even see a picture or two being taken while I’m there.

Joyce comes down in professional business attire. She’s wearing a gray pantsuit with a soft pink button-up blouse and black heels. Her dark hair in a long and beautiful braid.

I am taking her over to interview directly with Albert and Karen Jefferson. He’s my regional sales director and their five-year-old daughter needs a new nanny.

Mary agreed to watch Anna. I wanted to come to ensure I did everything in my power to help Joyce get a new job. And do so as quickly as possible.

“How do I look?” she asks as she enters the car.

“Stunning,” I say, then kiss her and start the engine.

We drive across town talking about Anna and how devastated she is that Joyce is not going to be her nanny anymore.

But my plan is to have Joyce around as much as possible so Anna will still get to see her often.

When we get to our destination, Joyce places both hands over her mouth, reminding me of Anna and her bad habit of chewing her knuckles.

“Don’t make me pull your hands out of your mouth, young lady,” I say in my best stern tone.

“I’m nervous!” she says, banging both of her feet on the car’s floor. “What if she doesn’t like me?”

I sigh and shake my head slowly and kiss her on the temple to try and soothe her nerves.

“She will love you,” I say. “Now, let’s go. We don’t want to be late.”

I lead her inside the big apartment building and introduce her to the doorman, a short and heavy man with a serious demeanor. He announces us to their apartment, and they confirm we are visiting, and then we’re off to the elevators.

Alone in the elevator, Joyce seeks comfort for her nervousness within my arms.

“This is getting serious, isn’t it?” she starts, almost a moan of complaint. “I mean, look at the steps we’re taking to be apart just so we can be together!”
