“All clear, Joyce!” She gives back my license. “Mr. Bardin’s office is on the top floor.”

“I know!” I wink at her as I walk in and try and put on a brave face.

So, he’s still here. Otherwise, the receptionist would have told me he was out. I get in the elevator and start rehearsing in my mind what I’m going to say, but I give up once I realize that everything sounds silly.

On the 12th floor, I get out and head to the end of the main hallway. It’s the same office where I had my first interview with Logan several months before and where this whole new chapter of my life began.

It feels like so long ago now.

I knock on the door and secretly hope he doesn’t answer. But his voice comes through. “Come in,” he says in his usual impatient tone.

I walk in, and I see his tough façade crumble the instant he sees me, all with a huge smile on his face.

“Oh, it’s you.” He stands to greet me, walking around his desk to give me a kiss on the lips. “I was wondering when you’d arrive. I’m glad I didn’t have to wait long.”

“Yes, it was much earlier than I thought!” I say, feeling cheerful, his smile making me feel more confident. “Mrs. Jefferson took the rest of the day off. She is taking Esther to the doctor for her annual checkup and wanted to be there.”

He nods as I speak then takes a seat on the edge of his desk, and I sit below him in a chair next to the desk, holding hands with him.

“What do you want to tell me, Joyce?” he asks me, starting to sense something is wrong.

I take a deep breath, then hold it. I’m hoping that if I turn blue, I won’t have to tell him anything.

When I finally release the air in my lungs, a jolt of courage overtakes me, and I say, bold and clear, “Remember when I said I was on the pill?”

I look at him. Judging by how big his eyes got, he needs no further explanation of what I mean, but I give it anyway, “The pill has failed us.”

Logan stares at his feet, and bites down on his lip, as if mulling over what to say.

“How far along are you?” He raises his eyes to me and asks carefully as if his words are a mallet and I’m a little glass sculpture.

“I don’t know. I took just a pregnancy test,” I shrug. “I wasn’t having a regular period anyway because of the pill, but I started with the morning sickness about a month ago.”

He gently touches my hair, and then brings me in for a hug, kissing the top of my head.

“We’ll take you to see a doctor soon,” he says, his lips brushing my hair. “This can’t go unchecked.”

“So, you’re not mad?” I look up at him like a naughty child caught in the act.

“Why would I be?” He looks indignant. “I have my part in this too. I will take care of you.”

I smile and stand up to kiss him, wrapping my arms around him as if he were a life buoy. Logan takes advantage of it, and holds me tight as well, kissing me deeply. It takes my breath away and I take in a huge gasp of air when he stops.

“Where did you learn to kiss like that?” I ask, my lips still close to his.

“I guess you just bring it out in me.” Logan shrugs with a sly smile.

Right after that he pulls me to his lap in one single motion, his strong arms finding no problem in lifting my weight. We resume kissing and I just let myself get lost in it, so relieved that he took the news well.

A wandering hand starts to climb my leg, raising up the hem of my knee-high skirt, and I encourage him, placing my own hand over his and squeezing it.

From the hem of my skirt, Logan’s hand starts to play with the hem of my panties, trying to blindly find its way inside me. I don’t feel completely comfortable with it knowing that the door is unlocked.

“Here?” I ask, and he knows what I mean.

He simply nods, a devious expression on his face, and I go on with my terms and conditions, “Then lock the door.”

He huffs, annoyed, rolling his eyes and growling in between his teeth, “No one comes in without me admitting them.”
