“Mom, if he’s lying behind my back now, can you imagine what would happen if we actually got married?” I say, mortified.

“Joy.” Now mom shakes her head. “He did a good thing! He went behind your back, but to help you! Stop being so stubborn and stop for a second to see what he actually did for you!”

Now my entire body is shaking, and it’s hard to keep steady hands while dealing with the food. I start to cook the chicken, now seasoned correctly, then turn to chop the vegetables.

“Mom,” I say, on the verge of tears. “Things are not that simple.”

“Oh, you young’uns and that obsession you have for complicating everything!” mom says, losing patience with me.

“Let him come to you, dear. Hear what he has to say.”

My favorite song starts to play very loud on our speakers. I start to hum along with it, but mostly ignore it, in favor of talking to mom.

“I don’t think he’s coming back. I’ve been rejecting him so harshly,” I say.

Sophia walks into the room, a sly smile on her lips. She stops right in front of me, lets out a little giggle, and says “There’s someone downstairs waiting for you, J…”

I raise an eyebrow, intrigued. “What? How do you know?” I ask, dumbfounded.

“Come look through the window!” Sophia can’t contain her excitement and pulls me behind her towards the living room.

Gabby leans over the windowsill and looks down with a grin from ear to ear. I look from her to the street level below, and what I find makes my jaw drop.

“Joyce!” Logan yells, blasting my favorite song from the speakers of his black Lamborghini. “Please come back to me!”

I start to laugh hysterically, not because I’m finding anything funny, but because I am nervous as hell. When I calm down, he’s frowning, which is typical of him.

“And how do I know I can trust you again?” I yell back at him and see his face still stuck in a frown.

“Well, someday you will!” he shouts to me, arms wide open. Now all that we need is rain for this scene to have come straight from a movie.

“You just have to give me a second chance!”

I cross my arms and shake my head, not letting him off that easy.

I poke my head out of the window again and say, “What makes you think you deserve a second chance?”

“Because I love you,” Logan says with firm conviction. “And I know you love me too!”

Now I’m shaken to my core, divided between my own stubborn beliefs and what I feel for him.

I look to my sides, and the neighbors are all peering down at the public display. I look at my family, and they’re all starry-eyed. Mom has turned off the stove and came to the living room to see.

Finally, I look down and see Logan holding the ring box, containing the same ring I gave back to him several days ago. I look at his hopeful face, my ears glued to every word he says.

“Joyce!” he starts. “You brought light to my life where there was only darkness, joy where there was only sadness, and warmth where there was only cold. When you came into my life I couldn’t stand you, but now I can’t think of my life without you. I don't give up on what I need and what I want, so I will ask you one more time, Joyce: will you marry me?”

Claps and loud cheers start. Even the neighbors on the other side of the street are watching and yelling in a chant, “Say yes! Say yes!”

Still looking down at him, I bite down on my lip and think for a second.

It all seems so silly and stupid, but in the end, what’s love if not a series of silly and stupid things?

“YES!” I yell at the top of my lungs to more wild roaring.

I rush out the front door and run downstairs, careful not to fall flat on my face in the meantime.

And when I see Logan, he has his arms wide open for me.
