We kiss a blissful kiss, a kiss to make up for all the time wasted while we were torn apart.

He pulls back only to put the ring on my finger again, then whisks me off my feet to dip me, and steal my breath with another hungry kiss.

The neighbors are clapping, catcalling, and whistling, but everything just fades into distant background noise as I get lost in his eyes.

But I do hear a small voice say, “Daddy, can we come out now?”

I turn to look behind Logan and I see Anna’s head poking out of the car window, eyes full of wonder at what she just saw.

“Anna!” I start walking towards the car. “I didn’t expect to see you he—”

I lean over and peer through Anna’s window and see that Jane is holding her in her lap. Jane looks at me with fear and shame, unsure of how to act.

“I’m glad you said yes,” she finally says softly, her eyes not quite meeting mine.

“You can look at me, Jane. I won’t bite you,” I say with a smile.

She opens the door, places Anna on the ground, and then finally looks at me, proud but wary.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness, Joyce. Especially from someone as precious as you. But please know that how I was feeling about the two of you together is no longer valid. I love you both.”

She reaches for my hand, then reaches for Logan’s, and brings both of our hands together.

“And I want you both to be happy, and for the baby and Anna to be happy too.”

Jane puts an arm around Anna’s shoulders, who smiles and embraces her knees, while Logan places a hand on her shoulder and looks from her to me, and vice-versa.

“I think I know what you two need to do,” Logan says, placing his other hand on my shoulder as well.

Jane and I look at each other, feeling the pain of a broken friendship trying to mend itself.

“I’m sorry, Joyce,” Jane says, teary.

“Oh, Jane!” and I start to cry.

We hug, sobbing, holding each other tightly. Anna hugs us both, and Logan copies her gesture, placing us all under his strong and protective wing.

I finally feel like a part of this family. Not more, nor less, but an equal to them all.

I bring them over to join my family, now part of theirs too.

Chapter Thirty-Four

LOGAN

It’sseveralmonthslater, and I’m relieved that things have been going smoothly since the night we all decided to make amends.

“Anna, please stop!” I order her again, but it’s useless.

“But I want to feel Penelope kick!” Anna says, sounding ecstatic.

“Let her be, Logan!” Joyce says, sitting on the couch while sporting her six-month-old pregnant belly. “That only means they’ll be close when she is born!”

“Am I the only one nervous around that giant egg now?” I say, and Joyce cackles at my metaphor, but I keep my serious expression.

Joyce pulls me down to kiss her, and I do, with all the gentleness I can muster to not hurt her.

“If it’s an egg, then your daughter is what? A baby chick?”
