“Let her be!” mom says, her short and thin hair carefully fixed to look amazing. “She’ll wake up before the ceremony.”

“Let’s go to my room. Let the kids sleep!” Gabby says, rushing us out.

“Call me if you need me, Carol. I have my phone!” I inform the nanny.

“I’ll take care of the girls, Miss Joyce!” Carol replies, animated.

We had a modest bachelorette party yesterday in a nice restaurant in Miami. What Logan did with the boys from the office, I have no idea, but he’ll also have to wake up early, and I don’t see him strolling through the hallways yet.

When we get to Gabby’s room, I sit on the edge of her bed and sigh loudly.

“I’m nervous!” I say, stomping my feet.

“Relax, woman!” Jane says, a little too enthusiastic. I am pretty sure she did not sleep, and all I saw her have for breakfast was a daiquiri. “Logan must be more nervous than you!”

“But he’s been married before, so he knows what to expect!” Gabby says, waving our worries away.

Jane clings to her shoulder and says with a pasty voice, “Having a case of the nerves on serious occasions runs in the family, Gabby! I’m having a nervous breakdown right now!”

“I think I speak for everybody when I say that we all noticed, sweetie,” mom says, an amused half smile on her lips.

“Letting go of your brother is that hard, huh?” Sophia asks, clearly having fun at Jane’s expense.

“Little bit,” Jane says, signaling a tiny amount with her fingers. “But I’m having to let go of a friend too. Do you know how hard that is?”

I stand up and go hug Jane, who leans into my touch like a scared puppy.

“You’re not losing me, silly!” I say into her ear, careful not to ruin her hair. “We’re going to be sisters!”

Jane pulls back, her eyes wide, as if suddenly making sense of things.

I wonder how much of this she’ll remember when she’s sober.

“Well, how about we eat something before getting into our dresses?” I announce in an extravagant fashion.

“Agreed!” Sophia says, her arms in the air and jumping up.

The group falls into laughter at Sophia’s reaction, and I grab the bedside phone to order room service.

Amid a charcuterie board and white grape juice, the dresses and shoes are put on, and the big moment is almost here.

Carol comes along with Penelope and Anna, both ready for the occasion as well. Penelope is wearing a cute little white dress coming to her knees, with frilly socks and adorable white ballet flats.

Anna has a tiara on her head and is wearing a gown that matches mine, down to the same embroidery and gemstone details.

“She’s fed, changed, and ready to rumble!” Carol says, handing Penelope to me.

“Thank you, Carol!” I hug her with my free arm.

“I’ll be right behind you if you need anything,” she says.

Carol is also dressed for the party, but she favors a pantsuit instead of a dress. Likely because that’s more practical to take care of the children, since she’s still working.

Reminded that not very long ago I was in her place, I put a hand on her shoulder and point her to the board, where Anna is already serving herself.

“You stay here,” I say. “Eat, drink, be merry! Today you’re my guest!”

“Thank you.” Carol smiles and pours herself a glass of juice.
