“How about that?” I ask her.

“Sounds great! What time?” she asks in return.

“Let’s say six. I need to be home early because of Harlan,” I inform her.

“Of course!” she repeats. “Six is fine! See ya, then!”

“I’ll text you…”

“Alright! Bye!”

She hangs up, and I feel giddy like a schoolboy who just asked his dream girl to the prom. Hell, I was exactly that boy.

I look over my shoulder and see Patrick and Mark observing me, waiting for me so they can get more sordid details on my love life.

And I decide to head back to them, storing my phone back in my pocket and bringing Wildfire to a gallop, and placing myself by their side.

“Guess who’s got a date?” I say with cheer, bringing the horse almost to a prance.

“Atta boy, Alex!” Patrick slaps me in the back, enough to knock some air out of me.

LIV

“Andhowareyougoing to wear your hair?” Bella asks, holding onto tufts of my dark locks.

“Bella…” I gently push her away. “I told you don’t need you to help me!”

“Oh, but I want to!” She looks at me with longing puppy eyes.

“Oh alright…” I sit at my computer desk, which sometimes plays the role of dresser as well. “Get me my stripper boots.”

Bella laughs. I call them stripper boots because they come all the way to the knee. They look great with tight leggings and a short skirt.

“And how about the top?” she asks, handing me the boots and moving to the items of clothing over my bed. “This off-pink one is going to look killer on you!”

I shake my head. “If I get flushed, it’ll be the same color as my face,” I say, with a frown.

“Um, what about the purple one?” Bella says, posing said purple top in front of her.

“Put it in the maybe pile!” I say, getting animated.

The truth is, I am excited to have dinner with Alex and get to know him better. I’m fine with a date, but I don’t want to jump into a serious relationship this quickly.

I shudder as I think about the last time I did. Well, it was the first time really. The first real relationship I had was in college and I was madly in love with him. I thought he loved me too, until he dumped me in front of the campus crowd at a restaurant over dinner, leaving me in shock, then crying my eyes out alone at the table after he left.

When I come out of my bad memories, I realize that Bella has fallen quiet, and I find that weird — Bella is usually so talkative thatnothearing her voice is a sign of trouble.

“Anything wrong?” I ask, looking up from putting on the boots.

“All I know about this guy you’re going out with is that he’s handsome…” she says, pouting.

“Oh, girl…” I jump from the chair to the bed, close to her and to the cute purple top she chose for me.

“I’m not sure there will be a second date out of this, so please don’t make me feel guilty. I mean… I also don’t know much that much about him yet.”

But that is a bold-faced lie.
