“Of course,” he gives me a smile so broad it warms my heart.

I call the car and he walks me to the door under Harlan’s pleas for cereal, and when I reach downstairs, the car is already there.

I’m hoping that Bella decided to go out last night and isn’t back home yet. Either that, or she is still sleeping after marathoning horror movies all night.

The car takes a turn for the steep hill where we live, and I start rehearsing my story in case I do run into her. Obviously, she knows I was out with a guy, but how long can I lie to her?

I get home, open the door that guides to the steps up to our place. My stomach sinks as I do because I hear the sound of the TV, meaning Bella is home and awake. I’m not ready to face her, but then again, this is my house too and I’m not going to run away from my best friend.

“Oh, look who’s doing the walk of shame!” Bella says, full of sass. “Same clothes as yesterday, hair a complete mess. All that’s missing is the scent of cheap cologne!”

“Expensivecologne, my dear!” I correct her, leaving my purse and my phone on the coffee table.

“Was he good?” he asks with her hands tented in front of her face.

And I freeze.

Bella and I always share a few select details about our amorous encounters, and if I don’t share anything, she is going to find it weird, but there’s no way I am saying a thing to her about Alex.

“He was…” I say, sheepish and turning red. “And that’s all I have to say about that!”

“Oh, comeon!” She yells with exasperation.

I sit on the couch, and I’m welcomed with a cushion to my face. “You have to tell me something!”

“No, Bella!” I grab the remote from her side and change it over to a food channel.

“Was he big?”

“Not telling you, Bella.”

“Did he make you finish?”

I go purple with awkwardness, and she starts to laugh like crazy.

“Bella, please. I don’t want to talk about it…” I groan, and thankfully she seems to calm down.

“Okay, geez,” she says, letting go of the subject. “But why are you being so secretive about this guy again? No man is worth keeping your best friend in the dark!”

I take a deep breath. I need to come up quickly with a reason why. Otherwise, she’ll start to get suspicious.

“He’s very cautious, Bella. And asked me for discretion.” I say, hands in the air, surrendering to the logic of this stupid argument.

“Oh my God. He’s married!” she interjects in a guttural voice.

“He was,” I inform her, standing up to head for a shower.

“Divorced?” Bella asks me with wide eyes.

“I already said too much, Bella!” I’m on the verge of losing my patience, but I manage to keep up with the half-jests, so she won’t get offended. “Listen, I need a shower. I’ll see you in a few.”

“Okay, Olivia’s Secret!” she says while giggling.

Leaving my phone out in the open was a mistake because when I return to the living room, Bella has my phone in her hand and a face of one wanting to murder me.

“Who died?” I ask, looking around for a hypothetical corpse.

“You!” She’s shooting bullets from her eyes.
