LIV

Iinsistedontakingmy bag with us when we went out, so he could just drop me off at the closest hotel before going home, and Alex wasn’t happy about it, but he obliged as the gentleman he is.

Bella’s plan is backfiring because it is only pushing us closer together.

Once we say goodbye, we kiss in front of Harlan, and the kid says a loud “Ew!” so resounding that I have to laugh.

Now that I’m alone in the tiny hotel room my money could afford, I consider how to kill my time until tomorrow.

First, I take off my shoes and sit down on the twin bed. Then I reach to the nightstand to get the remote and turn on the TV — zapping through each station and stopping only at cartoons.

I then reach for my purse, to take out my phone and my charger, plugging it into the wall, and lying down on my side to check my messages.

There are messages from Alex, early in the morning, the ones Bella saw and that ruined our friendship. There are messages from my mother, which I decide to answer later, and surprisingly enough, a message from Gail.

Can you come in early tomorrow?

I have a SPECIAL MISSION for you!

I grin as I read Gail’s theatrical texts.

I text her back:

What’s it about? I need to go apartment hunting tomorrow.

While I wait for her to reply, I check on Bella. There’s nothing there, but at least I’m not blocked yet.

I rehearse a message to send to Bella. I’m typing and retyping until I finally I give up.

I read Gail’s latest messages.

But don’t you live with Bella?

Anyway, I’ll give you the afternoon free. I just need pictures of a special ceremony at city hall in the morning. A local writer has won a national prize and is being honored.

I quickly text Gail back:

Okay, I will come in an hour early tomorrow.

Right after, Gail replies,Perfect! See you then!

My mind goes back to Bella, and I finally decide what to text her.

Please talk to me.

Four years of friendship can’t go down the drain like this.

I see that Bella is typing, so I hold my breath and wait for her response.

I frown when I read it.

It’s bad enough I will have to see you at work tomorrow.

Please don’t make things worse.

And then she blocks me.

I roll to my back and try to focus on the TV, watching a blue cat and a pink bunny have misadventures. All the while, I’m holding my phone close to my chest in a never-ending ache for Bella and the reasons why she hates me now.
