Bella squeals, jumps once in place and comes to kiss me on the cheek.

But I also sense that kiss is cold and full of venom. I haven’t encountered this version of Bella before, but then again, this is the first time I have someone serious in my life and she’s around to witness it.

She leaves my side and I’m divided between finding Liv or hiding under a table to laugh. I go find Liv, and the solace she can offer just by breathing the same air as me.

“What happened? You look horrible!” Liv says, gently touching my arm with her free hand.

I just shake my head, my eyes closed, slight smile on my lips still holding back the need to laugh.

“I was just awarded with the best ad for eggs ever!” I raise a finger in the air and look over my shoulder. Bella knows I’m mocking her and can’t do anything about it.

“What…?” Liv asks. She’s confused, and it’s only adding to my fun.

“Bella asked me for a job, and I made her come up with an ad for eggs,” I say, very amused.

I don’t have the strongest sense of humor, but Liv gives me a smile, which means I did something right.

“Why did she ask for a job?” she looks to the side, to see Bella staring at us.

My shoulders slump, and I fade like a flower under the hot sun. “She said she can’t stand you and needs to be away.”

“Oh,” Liv places a hand over her mouth. “So, it’s come to this?”

“Listen, I can give you a job instead and ignore her, just give me the word,” I say, holding onto her hands.

“No way, she would hate me even more!” She says immediately.

“Fine,” I let out a long exhale. “Are you sure you don’t want me to call her here? We can solve this now.”

“I will solve this, but now isn’t the right time, Alex. And I think it’s better if I do it one on one with her, but thank you.”

She kisses my jawline and leaves my side once more to go snap more pictures.

I glance at Bella. Her eyes shoot daggers, and I respond by sticking out my tongue to break through her tough façade.

She stops looking at me immediately. I need to be careful to not have too much fun being her boss.

Chapter Seventeen

LIV

TurnsoutBelladecidedto unblock me.

Unfortunately, it was just to bombard me with a metric ton of passive-aggressive messages, all undermining my relationship with Alex up and down, and left to right.

It’s out of the kindness of my heart that I don’t block her back. Every time I try to send her a message, she blocks me again, until she’s in the mood for the next scolding session.

The next session begins early on a Saturday morning.

Alex is out with Harlan for an appointment, and I’m chilling alone at his apartment, sitting by the balcony with a cup of hot coffee and my phone.

Did you have fun with my brother last night?

I see a text from Bella, and I can’t help but sigh.

I know you were together!

I don’t give it the time of day. What I do takes way more courage than what she is doing, and I press the button to call her and see what her reaction will be.
