Gonzo turned back to Mr. Stevens.

“What if she tells all? Would that help her situation?”

“Larry! There’s no way she did this. What’re you saying?”

“Shut up, Charlene. You know damned well she’s capable of anything. You raised her that way.”

“Iraised her that way? Who spoiled her rotten and treated her like an entitled princess since the day she was born?”

Gonzo had heard enough. “As entertaining as this is…”

“If she talks, will it help?” Mr. Stevens asked again.

“Let me consult with the Assistant U.S. Attorney and see what she says. In the meantime, have a seat in the lobby. I’ll come find you when I know more.”

“We’d like to see our daughter.”

“I’ll see what I can do about that later.”

Mr. Stevens didn’t like that response. He was probably used to people hopping to his every command.

Gonzo waited until they’d walked away before he turned to roll his eyes at Freddie.

“At least we can see where she comes by her charm,” Freddie said.

Gonzo snorted out a laugh. “No kidding. I’ll call the AUSA.” His phone rang with an out-of-state number. “Sergeant Gonzales.”

“This is Rosemary Bryant. My son has been arrested.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“What’s he being charged with?”

“Murder.”

Her cry of shock had Gonzo holding the phone away from his ear. “How… How can that be? He’d never do something like that. He’s an honor student at GW.”

“Our investigation shows that he accepted a ten-thousand-dollar payment from a woman who wanted her romantic competition eliminated.”

“There has to be some kind of mistake. He doesn’t need the money.”

“There’s no mistake, ma’am. I’d recommend you find a good defense attorney for him as soon as possible.”

“Where do I go for that?”

“The DC Bar Association should be able to recommend someone. If you don’t have the means, we can call the public defender’s office.”

“Tell him I’m working on getting someone.”

“We will.”

“Please… He’s my whole world. Please don’t let anything happen to him. I don’t know what I’d do…”

Gonzo’s heart broke for her. He couldn’t conceive of what it would be like to have his son charged with murder. Sometimes parents could do everything right and still have something like this happen. “I’ll wait to hear from you.”

“Thank you.”
