Gonzo ended the call and sat in Sam’s desk chair, gazing at the photo of her and Nick from their wedding day.

As if he’d conjured her, Sam texted him. How’s it going?

You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille.

She responded with laughing emojis. That bad?

Worse. Two college kids accused of murdering the third in a love triangle gone wrong. Lots of devastated (and a few entitled) parents. Good times.

Ugh, sorry. Have you got it sewn up?

Just about. Very sad all around.

Isn’t it always?

Yeah, I guess so. How’s the vacation?

Much more stressful than we’d hoped for. Rather than coming back to work on Monday, I’ll be going to Fort Liberty.

It’s awful.

Sure is, and Nick feels responsible, even though he isn’t. Tough situation. But we’re coping.

Sorry for everyone involved. Such a tragedy.

Thanks. I’ll be back on Tuesday for the first half of the day before the state dinner with the Canadian prime minister. (How is this my life?)

Is that a rhetorical question?

LOL, nope.

Enjoy the rest of the time away. It’ll all still be here when you get back.

Oh joy! Thanks for covering. It helps to know you’re in charge.

No problem.

Freddie came to the office door. “What’s next, boss?”

“I’m calling the AUSA. Hang on.” He put through the call to the office where the Miller triplets worked as the Assistant U.S. Attorneys. One of them was always on call.

“Faith Miller.”

“Hey, it’s Gonzo. I’ve got a case put together, and I’m ready for your input.”

“Be right there.”

“Thanks, Faith.” To Freddie, he said, “She’s on her way.”

Nicoletta rattledaround in Collins’s luxurious apartment all day, waiting for him to get home and tell her how the rest of her life would unfold. She hated feeling powerless over her own destiny, but she’d decided to put her faith in him and hope for the best.

Though she was tempted to snoop, she resisted the urge. He already had enough reasons to think she was beneath him. She didn’t need to give him more.

She stood at the window overlooking downtown Cleveland, noting the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next to the Browns stadium on the shore of Lake Erie. Even after living there for years, she didn’t know the city much better than she had when she first arrived. She’d spent most of her time there trying to survive and thrive, so she hadn’t given much thought to getting to know the place.

As she looked out at the lake in the distance, she thought about what Collins had said about trying to make amends with her son.

Her son, the president of the United States, of all things.
