He raised his head from her shoulder. “Because it’s… demoralizing. That the Joint Chiefs planted seeds of doubt about me that now have service members asking me to stay away.” He shrugged. “What kind of commander in chief am I if I don’t have the support of the military?”
“You are an amazing commander in chief, and you’ll show them that in time. There may be a few people who have gripes with you, but I refuse to believe it’s the entire military.”
“Terry said the same thing.”
“Terry is a smart guy, and so is your wife. You should listen to us.”
That earned her a small smile.
“I know it’s hard not to take these things personally, but you have to keep reminding yourself that two times you stepped up when your country needed you. You did what was asked of you, and you’ve risen to the occasion at every turn. Will everyone love you? Nope, but that’s on them. If they knew you,reallyknew you like I do, they’d adore—” She stopped short. “Are you getting hard again?”
Nick gave her a cheesy grin and shrugged. “What can I say? My wife is hot when she defends me.”
“I hope they never find out you’re a sex addict.”
“Only when my lovely wife is naked and saying nice things about me. Or when she’s breathing or sleeping or brushing her hair or—”
Sam kissed him. “You’re a very silly commander in chief.”
“Don’t tell anyone that, okay?”
“Your secrets—all of them—are safe with me.”
Chapter Twenty-Five
The next morning, Chief Farnsworth came into the pit.
Gonzo startled at the sight of the chief. “Hello, sir. What can we do for you?”
“Are you holding Randy Bryant?”
“We are. We’ve built a case implicating him in the murder for hire of Rachel Fortier.”
“You need to release him. Immediately.”
Gonzo stared at the chief. “May I ask why, sir?”
“The directive came right from U.S. Attorney Tom Forrester. He said Bryant is to be released immediately.”
“We can prove that he participated in a murder.”
“Release him.” The chief turned and walked away, leaving Gonzo staring at his back.
“What the fuck?”
“What happened?” Cruz asked.
“Farnsworth just ordered me to release Bryant. He said it came right from Forrester.”
“Uh, we have the guy on murder for hire.”
“I told him that.”
“What’re you going to do?”
Gonzo glanced at his friend. “The chief ordered me to release him, so that’s what I’m going to do.”
“But, Gonzo—”
