“How about you Tank, how long have you worked for David?” she questioned.

He set his muffin on his plate and swiped the napkin over his lips. “For about five years. I was the first employee hired on. A friend who knew David said he was looking for a security agent. I’d been in the army for twenty years before retiring, and the timing was right. I’d just gotten divorced.”

After finishing breakfast, they checked out of the hotel and arrived at Sam’s office around seven fifty-five. Bill was in his office, and Sam peeked her head around his door. “May I come in and speak with you?”

He smiled at her. “Of course, Sam. Come on in.”

She smiled back. “I’m not alone; Gray is with me. Do you mind?”

Bill furrowed his brows, but shook his head and walked around his desk to greet Gray.

They shook hands, and Gray said, “Thank you for seeing us, Bill. This is important.”

Bill cleared his throat. “I’m afraid I’m not going to like what you have to say, but please go ahead.”

Sitting in one of the chairs in front of Bill’s desk, Gray in the other, she leaned forward and cleared her throat. “Gray and I are getting married.”

Bill grinned. “Well congratulations, you two!”

“Anyway, since I’ll be Gray’s wife, I’m going to work with Gray at Kinkaide & Associates, so I’m giving you my two-week notice. Of course, I’m sure you know this already, but I’ll be available if there’s anything you need while you transition someone into my position.”

Bill nodded his head. “Sam, I’m very happy for you and Gray; really, I am. I’m very sad for us, though. You’re valuable. Under any other circumstances, I would offer you more money, a bigger office, or anything I thought would persuade you to stay. But the competition here is insurmountable, so I’ll wish you all the best and let you know that anything you need, either of you ever need, I hope you’ll come to me.”

She breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you, Bill. Thank you so much.”

The two men stood to shake hands, and Gray said, “Thank you, Bill. That means a lot to both of us.”

She was glad that was over. Her stomach had been in knots. “There’s something else. I’m not able to work today. We were involved in an accident yesterday, someone tried to run us off the road, and we have a security detail with us right now.” She leaned forward and dropped her voice. “His name is Tank.” She grinned.

Bill smiled. “Tank?”

“I know, right? Anyway, this building isn’t secure enough with all the people coming and going, so at least for today, I can’t stay. Moving forward, I may have to log in from home and work that way until the police can find this guy.”

Bill leaned back in his chair. “Sam, anything you need. Do the police know anything about this guy and why he’s targeting you?”

Gray joined the conversation. “We don’t know who the target is, Sam or myself. That’s why we have to be careful. But, after she was hit and then last night, I can’t take any chances.”

“Of course not.” They made small talk then said their goodbyes.

She looked up at Gray. “I would like to say hi to Jessie. Do you think that will be okay?”

Gray nodded and looked at Tank, who’d been standing outside the door. “Tank, Sam would like to visit a little with Jessie. We’ll go to Sam’s office and ask Jessie to come back there.”

Tank nodded his head. “That should work.”

They walked back to Sam’s office and closed the door behind them.

Gray asked. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I was nervous. I hated doing that.”

He grinned. “I know you did, but you did well, baby.”

She winked then turned to her desk and picked up the phone.

“Jessie, can you come back to my office? There’s a big man with no neck at the door. His name is Tank. Just tell him who you are.”

“Tank? Really? Tank?”
