“Yes. Come on back, and I’ll explain.”

She noticed the message light flashing on her phone, picked up the receiver and hit the message button. She listened for only a second or two before her face turned pale and she began shaking. Gray grabbed the phone to listen to the message. “Fuck this! Tank!”

Tank opened the door just as Jessie got there.

Jessie looked at Sam. “Are you okay, Sam? What’s wrong?”

She plopped down into her desk chair as she stared at Jessie. She nodded her head once and waved her in to come in and take a seat. Tank also walked into the office, and Gray took a deep breath. “Listen to this message Sam had on her phone.”

He motioned for Sam to push the message button and she hit the speaker button at the same time. An altered voice warned, “You think you’re so smart turning off the highway so we couldn’t catch you? Well, you won’t be safe next time, bitch. You’re a dead woman!”

Gray’s jaw clenched, his hands fisted at his sides. Tank looked at the office phone at the same time he pulled his phone from his pocket.

He hit a number on his phone. “Hey… Sam got a threatening message at her office. Listen to this.”

“Play the message again, please,” Tank said. He held his phone close to the office phone, so the person on the other end of the line could hear it. After the message played, he put his phone back to his ear and walked out into the hall to talk in private.

Gray walked over and wrapped his arms tightly around her. “We’re going to find them, Sam, I promise you.”

She nodded. “I know. It’s just scary. They want to kill me.” She fought the tremble in her lips. She’d not be weak; she’d face this and be strong. But, it was getting scarier by the day.

Gray filled Jessie in on what was going on and the news that they were getting married. Jessie squealed when she heard the marriage news and grabbed Sam’s hand to look at her ring.

“Oh. My. God. Sam. That is the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen! Huge, holy crap, huge.” She turned to Gray. “Nice job, Gray!”

She nudged him then walked around the side of Sam’s desk and gave her a hug.

“Congratulations, Sam. I’m so happy for you.” She turned to face Gray. “Congratulations, Gray. You’re a lucky man.”

He winked at Sam. “I know I am, but thank you for confirming.”

They talked a little more before Jessie had to get back to work, promising they’d talk again soon.

As soon as she left, Tank entered the office. He needed additional information; for instance, if there was a number of origination, what time the call came in, et cetera. He wrote the number down and recorded the call. They saved it on Sam’s phone and her computer, then she forwarded it to her home email, as well as to Gray’s, Tank’s, and David’s. When they were finished, they headed back to Gray’s office, wondering if he had any messages waiting for him. As soon as they walked into his office, he checked his phone. He hit the message and speaker buttons so Tank and Sam could listen.

The same robotic voice warned, “You won’t get away next time. That bitch of yours is dead.”

“Dammit!” he scowled.

He paced back and forth, nervously running his hand through his hair. She never took her eyes off him while Tank retrieved the information fromthiscall and emailed the message to all he’d sent the first message to. The voices in both messages were synthesized, so they couldn’t be recognized. It seemed female, but Tank said they would have it analyzed to know for sure. In the meantime, he called David to fill him in on this new development. He asked about the Tahoe and if they had been able to get anything out of it. He also asked about the security system at Gray’s house, asking David if he felt it would be adequate.

They talked for a while, and Sam’s mind wandered. She’d never done anything so bad to anyone that she thought deserved this kind of reaction. She thought about the law office and decided she hadn’t been directly involved with a case so nasty to prompt this kind of reaction. When Tank finished his call to David, he looked over at her, sitting quietly and lost in thought. “We’re doing everything we can to keep you both safe.”

She smiled. “I have no doubt. I was just thinking; do you think the attorneys and employees of the law office should be interviewed? I don’t recall any nasty cases where someone was pissed at the outcome of their claim or felt the firm had treated them unfairly, but I did want to mention it.”

Gray stopped his pacing and looked at Sam. He came over and knelt in front of her. “Sam, that’s a great thought, but it wouldn’t explain the letter, ‘You’re making a mistake with Kinkaide. He’s making a mistake with you.’”

She nodded. She’d forgotten about that.

Gray had his hands on her knees and was looking directly at her. “I won’t let anything happen to you. Do you understand?”

She stared into his eyes. “I know you won’t; I trust you completely.”

He squeezed her knees and stood. His cell phone rang, and he frowned when he looked at the screen to see who it was. He sent the call to voicemail. She looked at him with a question on her face her brows raised.

Gray took a deep breath. “Cheryl.”

She winced.
