It had been so long since she’d last put on anything that didn’t havethe sole purpose of making her blend in like a neutral wall color. What did she want to look like? What was her interpretation of boho? Long, loose dresses? Gauzy layers? Big hats and lots of accessories? Tassels and florals?

Selecting a baby-blue cold-shoulder top with ruffle details, she lined it up against her body. Could she see herself in this? “I never understood this trend. Are shoulders sexy?”

One of those bemused expressions crossed Logan’s face. He stepped back a little to make sure both Everly and the shirt were in the frame. His camera was smaller today, something he held in front of him to view the screen. It must have been easier to use in a cramped location like a clothing store.

“Right up there with elbows and pinkie fingers.”

Everly laughed. “Good to know.” She hooked the shirt back on the rack, then flicked through a few others.

A silk jacket in mauve florals on another display caught her attention. Immediately, Everly could picture it with some dark skinny jeans and booties. Maybe a fitted bodysuit underneath. The joy that always accompanied a good graphic layout or font choice fizzed through her veins. She was on to something.

The fabric felt like cool running water against her skin. She was so lost in the sensation as she ran it through her fingers that she didn’t hear Sady approach until the showrunner said, “That’s gorgeous.”

Everly jumped, then coughed, trying to clear her throat. No one as tall as Sady should be able to move through shadows, assassin-style, especially in heels.

“Right?” Everly laid the garment over her arm. Beneath her ribs, her heart skipped a few beats. Her first selection. Her first step toward the new her.

This was happening.

Sady glanced between Everly and Logan. “You two are talking, right?”

“What do you mean?” Everly’s heart hiccupped. How much did Sady already know about them?

“Make sure you narrate to him what you like and don’t like. And banter. Both of you. Don’t be afraid to break the fourth wall. Viewers are eating it up. They love your energy.”

Everly eyed the showrunner warily. “Right. Our energy.”

“We’re on our way to our highest streaming numbers yet.” Sady was practically bouncing on her heels. “Iknewyou were going to be one of our stars this season. It’s incredible.”

Everly shrugged, then spun around to focus on a set of dresses behind her. She didn’t care about ratings or anything like that. She just wanted to be portrayed honestly. As someone with bigger goals than dating.

Sady wandered off with her phone a few minutes later. Once she’d disappeared, Everly motioned for Logan to lower his camera. She stepped close enough that the cotton of his shirt brushed her bare arm, and even though there was no skin-on-skin contact, a little shiver wended its way up her spine.

“How do you feel about this?” Everly glanced toward Jazzy and Sophie on the opposite side of the room.

Logan followed her gaze. “What, Joe? He’s fine.”

“No. You being incorporated into the show. Sady is clearly concocting another romance plot.”

He smirked. “You make it sound like one of those historical shows where the women are all scheming to bed the duke.”

“A Regency romance?”

He shrugged. “Sure.”

“It sounds like you’re a fan, Logan.”

Another shrug. The physical equivalent of a grunt if there ever was one. “They’re fun.”

Suddenly, nothing sounded more appealing than snuggling up with him on the couch under a warm blanket to binge some Regencies.

And then maybe reenact some of the steamier scenes.

There was that one on a staircase…

Everly honed her attention on a stack of jeans before her face ignited from the scandalous thoughts in her head. “I just want to know… are you comfortable with this… thing…” She had no idea what to label them, and Mr. Monosyllable did not seem interested in helping her out. “… with us being on the show?”

That solemn wrinkle returned to his brow. “Whatyouthink is more important.”
