“Elizabeth is really nice, and smart, too,” I say, trying to break the ice.

“She’s mine so fuck off.”

I pull up my knees to my chest and nod my head. “That’s not where I was going. I’m straight.”

“Don’t care.”

“You care a little,” I jibe. “Or else you wouldn’t have called her, right?”

“I called her because that’s what she would have done in my position.”

“You guys go out helping every car you see that breaks down or am I special for some reason?”

“Actually,” Samantha says, twisting towards me, sitting with her legs crossed on the couch. “You happen to be special.”

“Look—I’m sure you saw those photos of me circling around last month. Those were fabricated by an angry guy I turned down who couldn’t handle rejection.”

“You seem to attract men like that,” she says.

“What makes you say that?” I ask.

“I saw what you did to the store on Second Street.”

Elizabeth opens the door to the garage and walks in before I can utter another word. How much did she see? Why didn’t she do anything?

“Thankfully, the car looks worse than it is. I’ll text you the car parts and have you order them. We’ll go from there.”

I give a grim smile and stand up.

“Thanks, Elizabeth.”

“What’s going on?” Elizabeth asks, probably sensing the unease in the room.

“I told her,” Samantha says.

Elizabeth looks at me and nods. “Oh.” No wonder she was looking at me with pity all day and offered to fix my car for free. She thinks I’m a disaster.

“We just want to know who threw Derek through the window,” Samantha adds.

“I—don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I saw Derek follow you out of the bar as I was leaving my shift. I saw him try to attack you but then someone came out of nowhere and pummeled him through the window. Was it Elijah? Is he your lover?”

“For fucks sake, Samantha, give her a break,” Elizabeth barks.

My head spins. She knew this whole time and hasn’t said anything? Maybe she was waiting for the perfect moment and followed me around. Maybe she’s the one who messed with my car to get me to talk to her.

“I—I have to go,” I say, rushing for the front door.

Samantha grabs my arm and I shake it loose. “What the hell?”

“Look, she’s just curious she won’t tell anyone. And I still have your car in my driveway,” Elizabeth adds with sorrowful eyes.

“I’ll have it towed back to my house, but uh, thanks Elizabeth. Go fuck yourself, Samantha.”

I leave the house and find myself in the middle of a run-down neighborhood. After walking a couple blocks, I pull up the uber app, only to see that my funds are drained. Shit!

I call Dad but he doesn’t answer, so I call Jessica next and get nothing but rings.
