“She just suspects right? If someone really had evidence on us, then we would know.”

“Right. And her girlfriend said she’s not going to say anything. She felt bad for me and offered to fix my car. That’s before I realized they knew, though. But now my car is still in her driveway.”

“Okay, we’ll wait for the tow truck. I’ll do the talking. This is the area people go to score cocaine and heroin, you know that right? This isn’t a safe place to be walking around.”

“Well, gee, I’ll try to remember that next time!” I yell. “Should I be concerned you know that?”

“I thought everyone knew that.” He shrugs. “Stay away from Northwood. If there was a St. Paul saying that would definitely be a contender.”

“You’re so fucking dramatic,” I lol.

We sit in silence until we see the tow truck pass us and we follow it to Elizabeth’s house. Elizabeth stands in the garage with Sam. The hood of my car is still up, and they are digging around. Elijah tells me to stay in the car, jumps out as soon as it’s in park, and runs to the house.

I hop out to greet the driver, the same one, and tell him how sorry I am about the inconvenience. As Elijah talks to the pair in the garage, the driver backs his truck up and takes my car away, forcing Elizabeth to close the hood and back up.

“Come on, Elijah. Let’s go,” I say, not wanting to get a step closer to them.

“I see your boyfriend came to save you again,” Sam yells from the garage. I storm in to stand beside Elijah, who somehow looks afraid of Sam despite her small size.

“I told you to stay in the car,” he snarls.

“I had to talk to the driver,” I say.

Sam scoffs and stands beside Elizabeth, who seems very embarrassed. She stands with her head hung low, eyes looking at her feet. “I’m sorry, Taylor. I really am,” she says.

“Don’t fucking talk to her,” Elijah yells. I grab his arm and shake my head.

“It’s fine. It’s okay,” I say. “Yes, we were the ones outside of the storefront. Derek was attacking me, and Elijah was there. Right place, right time. No, we didn’t tell anybody and no, we don’t know where Derek is. Happy?”

“But you’re still fucking your brother, right?” Sam says with a grin. I can feel Elijah go stiff beneath my touch. “Because he told me you two used to fuck before you left. Isn’t that right?”

Unexpectedly, Elijah is silent. “Fuck you. We’re leaving.” I grab his hand and drag him out with me to the car.

“I’m sorry, Taylor, really,” Elizabeth adds as we walk to the car. I throw them my middle finger as Elijah hops into the driver’s side.

We take off towards home. No Bibio tonight.

Halloween night

It’s still hard for me to believe I’m part of the St. Paul Royals. Fourth line center, but I’ll make my way to first line with enough face time with Coach. Levi’s become a great friend already. He moved from a shitty town in south Ohio to play for St. Paul, despite being offered a position at Cincinnati University. I’ve shown him around some places, how to get a cheap beer and where the best parties are.

I meet Levi at Sally’s and order us both a light beer. He sips it but looks over his shoulder the whole time, like he’s afraid he’ll be recognized as an underage Royals player and get booted from the team. Who’d have thought my first college friend would be such a pansy?

We played a strong game yesterday, and Levi debuted to Coach how he can almost hit the puck with his left hand. He’s working on it. Maybe he’ll get to first line with me at some point.

A group of girls saunter in through the door of Sally’s. I recognize a couple of them from campus. Sam’s bleach blonde hair stands out from the crowd, and I wave her over.

“Really? Sam?” Levi shakes his head.

“Shut up. She’s hot,” I whisper as she comes over and takes a seat by Levi. She wears a skintight kitty cat outfit complete with the ears for Halloween. Levi and I decided not to dress up this year, but watch the girls come in and out of the bar in their sexy costumes.

Sam’s pretty, but she’s a little rough around the edges. That’s putting it lightly. But she makes me forget about Taylor, and that’s all that really matters.
