Relief washes over his face, and he pulls me into a comforting embrace. In that moment, I realized I was not giving up by accepting help.

The following day, the doctor gave us the all-clear, and Demetrius, along with a few other men, accompanied us to the plane for our journey back home. Vlad leads me to our seats, and we settle down. Resting my head on his chest, I gently close my eyes and listen to the comforting sound of his heartbeat.

"Sleep, my love. I will wake you when we get there."

I nod, and soon I am asleep. I feel the plane moving, and when I wake again; we are already in the air. I know when we land, the repercussions of what happened will begin. There is no way my father will let this go. Don Vinci will see this as a slight and an insult. He will come for vengeance. I can only hope that he doesn't do it before we are ready for him, too. But I know it won't be long before we see him.

Chapter 39

Vladimir

Oncewetouchdown, this protective shield will be lifted and we’ll all be in grave danger. I’m really hoping that Demetrius can delay sending Salvatore’s body to the Don. Both Rose and I need time to recover and heal. However, regardless of if the body is sent, I have a strong sense that the Don will soon come knocking on our door, accompanied by the entire Italian Mafia. Demetrius sits opposite us, his laptop open and his fingers flying across the keys. He’s tirelessly working to stay one step ahead of the impending storm. At one point, he looks up, meets my gaze, and gives me a reassuring nod.

"We have to make a plan. The Don will be furious when he finds out what has happened. We have to prepare. I don’t know if Salvatore was checking in daily or not."

"Did you send the body yet?"

"No, I had them store it in a freezer. You need time to heal.”

I nod "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. We have a long way to go."

I know he is right. There's plenty of work on our plate. It won't be easy and odds are it will be bloody.

"What about Rose? Does the Don know where she is?"

He nods "Not yet. For now, as far as we know, he thinks they are on ... well. I wouldn't call that a honeymoon."

"When will he learn she's not present?"

He sighs and sets the laptop aside. “I’m not sure if they had anything set up for him to check in. So honestly? Who knows? But we should have a little time.

I nod. Is there enough time for us to prepare?

"Not much."

"That will have to be enough. I need to get her settled and make sure she is safe."

He nods "I agree. We have a room made up for you both at the house. I think for now we should bring everyone to the compound and have them send their families away. The Italians have already shown they have no respect for women."

I agree, brushing Rose's hair from her face. My poor Rose. "Anyone who will let this happen to their own child will do anything."

"They are savages, it seems."

They are indeed. “Yes, they are. Rose and the others will have to be protected. We will have to be careful. They won’t give up until she is dead.”

"I will send Anton and the others out to collect everyone. Once they are safely within the walls, we can plan."

I nod "I will get her settled and come down to discuss the plan."

He shakes his head. "No. Rose and Luna will need to be involved in the planning. Rose is an asset. She knows how he will react and they both deserve to know the plan since we will lock them in the safe room I had built after what happened with Viktor."

"I don’t like it, but I fear you’re right."

"They can help. Besides, Luna would kill me if I left her out of it." He looks up and nods. "Once we are sure everyone is safe, we can move forward."

"I know he will come quickly."
