I can feel my face heating again and I look away from Wyatt, biting my lip to keep my smile from growing too big. Wyatt squeezes my hand once, quickly.

“What?” he asks. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No”—I shake my head violently—“not at all. No one’s ever, um, no one’s ever said anything like that to me before.”

Wyatt’s grin widens and I have to look away before it hurts my eyes.

“Well, that’s a real shame, Lucille. But as long as I’m around, you should learn to get used to it. Apparently, when it comes to you, I can’t stop my romantic ramblings.”

I laugh. “Please don’t.”

Wyatt squeezes my hand again, his eyes flashing with something that makes my heart rate speed up dangerously.

“Can I take you somewhere?” he asks.

“Mm, depends. Where are you taking me?”

“It’s a surprise.”

And now his eyes are positivelytwinkling.

Chapter Fourteen

Wyatt

ThereisachanceI may be in over my head. But there’s an even greater chance I don’t care. Watching Lucy talking about her writing was the most beautiful thing I think I’ve ever seen. Her eyes were so wide and bright and I don’t think she even realized how big her smile was. It was like she couldn’t contain it. And the more I watched her—the more she talked—the more I realized how screwed I was.

I like Lucy Carter.

I like Lucy Carter quite a bit, and as much as that terrifies me, it also excites me. I’m not ready to let it go just yet. I’m not ready for the night to be over just yet.

“Uh, Wyatt?” Lucy asks from the passenger seat of my truck.

“Yes, Lucy?”

“Where are you taking me?”

“I told you, it’s a surprise.”

“See, the more you say that, the more concerned I get.”

“You don’t like surprises?”

“Um, no I like them. It’s just that it’s dark and we’re driving down a road with no streetlights, surrounded by woods and it occurs to me that wherever we’re going seems like it would be the perfect place to commit murder.”

I bark out a surprised laugh and Lucy smirks at me.

“I’m not going to murder you, weirdo.” I roll my eyes.

Lucy sticks her pinky in front of me, her whole body turned to face me in her seat.

“What’s this?” I ask, nodding at her pinky.

“My pinky, dummy.”

“Is it really?” I widen my eyes and she huffs beside me.

“Pinky promise you’re not going to kill me.” She wiggles her pinky in front of me.
