“Good Lord, woman.” I sigh, exasperated.

“Pinky promise,” she sing-songs.

I hook my pinky with hers and she hums happily.

“I’m not going to murder you, geez. We’re going to my farm.”

“This isn’t the way to your farm.”

“That so?”

She squirms a little in the seat and I wipe my hand down my face to hide my smile.

“Okay, I don’t think this is the way to your farm.”

“It’s the back way. Because we’re going to a certain spot on my farm.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to look at the stars with you for a while.”

“Oh,” she breathes.

“That okay?” I ask.

“Yeah,” she says, smiling softly, “that sounds nice.”

“Okay, then.” I grin at the road in front of me.

“Wyatt?”

“Yes, Lucille?”

“This is the best date I’ve been on in a long time.”

I reach over and grab her hand, lacing my fingers through hers. Like they belong there. I could get used to this, Iwantto get used to this.

“Date’s not over yet, sunshine,” I say softly, my eyes still on the road.

I pull the truck up to the dirt driveway at the back of the farm. There’s a gate a few feet away we keep locked with a NO TRESPASSING sign chained to it. I glance at Lucy and, unable to stop myself, I bring her hand to my lips and kiss her knuckles so quickly and lightly she looks a little dazed.

“Be right back, gotta unlock the gate.”

I hop out of the truck and run to open the gate. I take a few deep breaths as I push it open, forcing myself not to look back at Lucy. My heart is racing dangerously fast and I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

I shut the truck door as I get back in and grin over at a still dazed looking Lucy. She smiles at me and my heartbeat starts to slow down.

“Okay, so I don’t think any of the cows will be on this part of the farm tonight, I put more hay and sweet feed on the north side so that’s probably where they’ll stay,” I tell her.

“Um, okay?” she says, confused.

“That said, if they do get nosy and wander over, they’re harmless. You’re not scared of cows are you?”

“To be completely honest, I have no idea. I’ve never been around many cows.”

“Well, if they come this way, and you decide you are a little freaked out, tell me and we’ll go, okay?”

I tap my fingers quickly on the steering wheel, turning on the high beams while I find the perfect place in the pasture to park.
