Pulling on a pair of sweats, he left his bedroom. Finding his phone in the kitchen, he saw that he had a missed call from the super. It was barely seven in the morning, but he called the guy back anyway. Ten minutes later, he was at the door with a massive key ring in his hand.

“Where’s Miss Cooper?” he asked with a slight frown.

Mac Quint had been the super of the building as long as Sam had lived here, and man had never tried to hide his dislike for him. He’d probably heard the rumors and suspected just how involved Sam was with the Bratva.

That also explained the tension that rolled off of him when they interacted. It was tinged with fear.

“She’s sleeping,” Sam said. He’d let Mac draw his own conclusions about that, not that it was any of his business.

“Oh, ok. Well, I unlocked her door. So, maybe you should go get her…”

Sam smiled coldly, a strange possessive feeling taking over when he imagined Lexi coming out of his bedroom in only her thin robe for the super to see.

“I’ll let her know that the apartment is unlocked when she wakes up.”

For a moment, he thought that Mac might push the issue, but Sam knew how to be intimidating. A single look promising violence was enough to strike fear into the hearts of most men.

Mac was no exception.

He left without another word, and Sam headed to the kitchen to start a pot of coffee. The smell of the fresh brew filled the air, and he could barely wait until it was done to pour himself a mug with a splash of milk.

He wasn’t much of a cook, but he could whip up a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast. He had just grabbed the ingredients he needed out of the refrigerator when his phone rang. He didn’t have the number saved in his phone for security reasons, but he recognized it as one of his men.

“Hello?” he answered while taking a sip of his coffee.

“Hey, boss.” The man on the other end of the phone was Dmitri. He wasn’t just one of the men in Sam’s brigade, he was a computer whiz. That made him the perfect man to help with Nix’s situation. “I got the information you were looking for.”

Sam put the call on speakerphone and started to crack eggs into a bowl. “You found some dirt on the DA?”

This was the best plan that Sam could come up with. He ordered Dmitri to find something shady in the DA’s life, everyone had something. He didn’t care what it was, as long as he could use it topersuadethe man into dropping all charges against Nix.

“Hell yeah, I did. The esteemed DA Michael Garrett is having an affair. Get this, she’s only nineteen years old and his kids’ babysitter.”

Sam smiled. This was perfect. “You’re sure about this?”

“Absolutely. The dumbass is terrible at covering his tracks. I found out that he’s been taking her to a motel during the day at least once a week for the past six months. From there, it was easy to get my hands on images from security cameras.”

“Send it all to me. I want it today.”

“Are you planning to blackmail him?”

“Of course,” Sam said, pulling out his toaster. He was going through the motions of making breakfast without much thought, his mind too occupied with his plans to get the DA under his thumb. “He’ll drop the charges unless he wants the world to know his dirty little secret. I should have Nix out of jail by tomorrow.”

As he spoke, he turned to the oven to turn on a burner, only to stop in his tracks as he saw Lexi standing in the doorway of his kitchen. She was wearing one of his T-shirts and staring at him in surprise.

Fuck.

“I’ll call you back,” he said to Dmitri, ending the call.

She heard about his plan to blackmail the DA. What the hell was wrong with him? How could he have had that conversation on speakerphone while she was in the apartment?

He thought that she was in too deep of a sleep to wake up anytime soon, but he was wrong. Now, he had no choice about what to do next.

“Fuck, Lexi,” he said, scrubbing his hand down his face. “You shouldn’t have heard that.”

“I won’t tell anyone,” she said, and he could see the panic in her eyes. She knew how serious this was.

“I can’t take that chance. You can’t leave.”
