Her eyes widened and she backed up a step. “Are you going to…killme?”

Some might think that he should. There were some hardass bastards within the Bratva that would probably do it, but Sam had never developed much of a taste for ending life without a damn good reason, and he wasn’t sure that this could be counted. She hadn’t done anything wrong. Was it worth it to do something so drastic just because shecouldcause trouble or the syndicate?

He didn’t think so. Besides, he liked her. Maybe that shouldn’t have mattered, but it did.

“No,” he said, moving toward her. She flinched away from him, and it felt like a punch to the gut. Not that that made any sense. Wasn’t he just contemplating getting rid of her for good? “But I meant what I said. You can’t leave, but I’m not planning to hurt you.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

He grabbed her arm, guiding her down the hall to the bedroom. She tried to pull away, but he kept his grip firm, not squeezing too hard, but also not giving her an opportunity to get free.

“Let go of me!” she shrieked.

“You’re staying here until I can get this done.”

“What?”

She was screaming in his ear, and he winced.

“It’ll just be a couple of days,” he said, pushing open his bedroom door and shoving her inside. She stumbled but didn’t fall before turning to him with an indignant huff.

“The hell it will! I’m not going to be your hostage.”

“Do you really think that you have a choice?”

He could resist chuckling as she glared at him. Her hair was a mess from sleep, and something about that combined with the fire in her eyes reminded him of an angry kitten with hackles raised.

He wasn’t going to tell her that though. She was pissed enough.

“Stay here,” he said, schooling his expression into one of intimidation. But she didn’t cower. Anger drew her mouth down into a frown.

“And what if I don’t?”

He arched an eyebrow. “Then, I guess I’ll have to tie you to the bed.”

She let out a cry of outrage as he closed the bedroom door, but she didn’t try to leave it, not yet. He wasn’t foolish enough to think that would last. Going back to the kitchen, he grabbed his phone and texted Dmitri, ordering him to bring a lock for the bedroom door.

He didn’t love the idea of locking Lexi up, but it was better than hurting her. He wished he had a plan, but he really had no idea what he was going to do next.

“This is bullshit!” she yelled from the bedroom, and she shook his head.

Maybe breakfast would calm her down. He finished making the scrambled eggs he’d started before she overheard his conversation. It didn’t take long, and he kept listening for the sound of the bedroom door opening, but it didn’t. When the food was ready, he brought a plate to the bedroom, holding it out in front of him like a peace offering.

He found Lexi standing at the window. She’d opened it and was nibbling her bottom look as she looked out.

“It’s a long way down,” he said, startling her. She whirled around, narrowing her eyes at him.

“Maybe it’s worth the risk.”

“I doubt it.”

She slammed the window shut so hard that he was surprised it didn’t break. He didn’t expect her to have such an attitude, but the strange thing was that he liked it. Her sassiness ignited a burning desire inside of him.

A few hours ago, he would have acted on it. Now, he was pretty sure she’d try to tear his face off if he attempted anything.

“I brought you food,” he said. “Are you a coffee drinker?”

She glared at him but gave a curt nod. He sat the plate down on the dresser.
