He watched her pull on her lower lip with her teeth as if pondering his question. He was annoyed to say it, but the move mesmerized him. Good Lord, she was getting to him.

“Both.”

It was time to get back in the driver’s seat. He set his glass on the coffee table and turned sideways in his seat.

“What made you decide to come over tonight, Dakota? Especially looking the way you do? Were you on your way out?”

“Would that bother you?”

He smiled. “It depends.”

“On what?”

“On who was with you.”

“Say for argument’s sake, I wanted you with me.”

“Then I’d say it wouldn’t bother me.”

She finished her wine, and then set the glass on the table. When she did, Logan was afforded a spectacular view of her bosom, and subsequently her rear end. It was getting hard to ignore the fact that Dakota was purposefully trying to turn him on. Or the fact that she was succeeding.

“So how long will we be volleying back and forth across the net, Dakota?”

She smiled. “Not long. I came over because I wanted to apologize, Logan. You weren’t ready to hear it before, and I completely understand why. Everything you said about us…about me, was absolutely right. I hadn’t let go of all my animosity yet, and I should never have consciously or subconsciously continued to hold you accountable for my issues. I’m here tonight because I wanted to ask for your forgiveness, to assure you that it won’t happen again, and to say that I miss you.”

“I’ve missed you, too, Dakota. And this hasn’t all been on you. I was overly harsh when you came to me in Montego Bay. All I can say is that all of my anger was not your fault. Some things I was dealing with were all my own issues, and I shouldn’t have taken it out on you. I’m sorry.”

“Apology accepted, but where we are…it’s not enough.”

Logan nodded. “I know. It was wrong of me to make you think you were only to blame and—”

“No, I’m not talking about that. It’s the work relationship that we have…it’s not enough. I want more, Logan.”

He leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest. “How much more, Dakota?”

“I want our relationship back to the way it was. Before it got derailed. I love you, Logan. I want us to be a couple again, not just business associates.”

He remained silent, so she sat down on the table right across from the couch. She leaned forward, and ran her hand slowly up his leg. Her eyes implored him. “Please. Logan. I want you…all of you.”

The pleading note in her voice put a chip in the wall he had erected around his heart, but still he resisted. His hand clamped down on hers to halt her progress.

“Dakota,” he said raggedly. “I can’t play this cat-and-mouse game with you. I’m willing to jump into the deep end with both feet here but—”

She held a finger up to his lips. Dakota moved forward until she straddled him on the couch. Her eyes bored into his. “I promise, I won’t let you drown.”

Chapter 17

That did it. Logan lost all remnants of restraint after Dakota’s declaration. He was not in it alone, and that was all the assurance he had ever needed. She was with him. He grabbed both sides of her face and pulled her forward onto his lap until their lips were locked together.

His hands roamed over her body, as if committing it to memory. He cupped her rear end and rocked her over his erection.

She reacted instantly to the friction their connection caused and moaned his name between their lips.

Logan was lost then. He had forgiven her the moment he opened the door, but had wanted to draw out the torture of doubt for her. It was the last childish thing he would do to cause her pain. From here on out, her pleasure was his prime directive.

He set her back on his lap, but held her tightly against him. His arms locked around her. She was not getting away this time. His thumb stroked her cheek, and then her lips. He dipped his head to kiss the sensitive spot on her neck, and was rewarded when a pleasurable sigh escaped her lips.

“Say it, Koty,” he commanded.

“Forgive me, and make love to me, Logan.”

“Baby, I forgive you. In fact, between your beautiful face and that damned dress, you had me at hello, but that isn’t what I’m looking for.” What I need. He slid a thumb across the underside of her breast, tracing the outline of her underwire bra. He knew where she wanted him to touch, but he would not give it to her…yet.

Dakota’s smile was luminous. “I love you, Logan Montague.”

He had waited forever to hear those words in that context. Logan closed his eyes and just enjoyed the feel of her body on his, and the words of love echoing in his ear.
