Aditya put an arm around him. “Don’t look so shocked. I have my sane moments.”

“They are rare and far,” Kabier replied.

The two of them returned to join the party. Rohan followed them for a distance and halted. Instead, he turned to the stables. He was happy to have found a place with a warm group of friends, but he was happiest only when she was near.

Jiya entered the stables and went straight to Xerxes. Sensing her, he popped his head out of the stall. She offered him an apple that he plucked from her hand. Delighted, she stroked his nose. She’d especially come here to meet him. It was in front of him that she and Rohan had agreed to try being in a relationship that first time. It was in front of him that he’d broken up with her, and it was in front of him that she’d pushed him away. He’d been witness to moments they had hidden from the rest of the world, and it made sense that he be a part of today also.

“Hey, boy!” she began. “Rohan and I got married today. He’s doing okay now. I think he’s finally beginning to be free of all his burdens. It’s just going to be him and me from here on.”

The horse neighed, and Jiya laughed. “And you too, of course. You know we both love you.”

The horse pushed further into her hand as if in agreement again. She smiled. Xerxes reinforced her belief that he understood what she was saying, always.

“I love how you communicate with my horse.”

She looked sideways and found Rohan leaning against a pillar, watching her, arms crossed.

“He’sourhorse,” she declared.

Rohan chuckled. “Yes, wife, he’s ours.”

He moved closer to her. “So, has our horse told you that you still haven’t learned to ride? He wants you to.”

Jiya grimaced. “Fine, I promise to learn.”

Rohan laughed. “Why do I have a feeling you won’t keep this promise?”

“Well, then you have a lifetime to ensure that I keep it.”

“I will…” He petted Xerxes’s nose. “After all, our kids will want to go riding with the two of us.”

“Kids?” She gulped. “You want kids? We’ve never talked about this…”

“Someday, when we’re both ready,” he looked at her. “Don’t you want kids?”

“I do, very much, and for them, I will learn to ride.”

He smiled.

Jiya watched as he whispered soft words to the horse. After he’d told her of his awful childhood, she’d worried whether he’d want to have kids or not. She would have been okay with whatever he wanted, but knowing he was willing to have a future that involved children made her ecstatic. He was really on the road to healing, and she was proud of him.

She ran her gaze over him. Her husband looked so handsome today in his light grey suit and white shirt. But what she loved the most was the smile on his face. Her heart rejoiced on seeing him happy. His eyes sparkled brightly. He was finally free of all the darkness that had cloaked him at one time.

Her eyes paused on his pocket square. “Oh my God, you saved my hanky?”

Rohan looked at the pink pocket square with red hearts and then at her. “Of course.”

She beamed. This man surprised her ever so often. He’d saved her hanky from that first time she’d kissed him, when she hadn’t even known she was falling for him. He’d thought she was special even then.

Rohan petted Xerxes’s nose. “Hey, boy, should I tell her about the gift I got her?”

Xerxes snorted.

Her lips tipped. “You got me a gift? Where is it?”

“Our den now has a whole section devoted to your fairy tales. All first editions.”

“Oh my God.” She beamed. “That’s perfect. Those bookshelves are complete now.”
