“Sheena, meet my friends. We were all in the same prison!” He laughed, his voice grating against her skin. She was scared out of her mind as the possibilities of all that could happen to her leapt at her.

God, Rajiv. He didn’t even know where she was.

She stood. A breeze of cool air lapped at her. She turned and found the balcony doors open. Realization dawned. Her heart skittered. This was, probably, the very same balcony that Rohini had jumped from.

“Yes, this is the very same one,” Karan confirmed, as if reading her mind. “I hadn’t even done anything to her. That stupid bitch just got scared because I came on to her, and before I could stop her, she ran and jumped off.”

“Sure, you did nothing,” Sheena scorned. “Rohini wasn’t stupid. She called me that night. I heard you forcing yourself on her. I heard her sayNo. She must have been so scared of you that she preferred jumping from the balcony than allowing you to hurt her.”

Karan circled Sheena. “See, now you have a chance to relive that night, but with a twist. If my friends or I catch you, then youwillwish for death. But if you’re faster, you can run and jump from the balcony, just like her.”

Mad, he was certainly mad. She stared at the ugly faces of the four men. They all stared at her lasciviously. One of them even licked his lips. She wanted to throw up. Death was better than what they had planned for her. She started backing a few steps.

“You’re still a coward, aren’t you?” Sheena asked Karan, looking around for something, anything, she could use as a weapon. But everything was covered. “Is this your revenge? Throwing me at the mercy of you and your friends or watching as I end my life?”

His eyes brightened. “Either will do, but I know what we will prefer.”

Despair clawed at her. Hope began to wither. She had finally met a man she loved wholly and completely and who loved her back, but now, because of her past, their dreams would be shattered.

Out of nowhere, one of the men charged at her. He caught her arm in a painful grip, and Sheena screamed. All of a sudden, the main door flew open and Rajiv charged in. Everyone in the room was stunned. Relief replaced some of the fear engulfing her. Rajiv was here. He’d come for her. Thank God. She wanted to cry. Her eyes barely met Rajiv’s when Karan and his two friends lunged at him.

She couldn’t even see what was happening to Rajiv because the man in front of her began to drag her. She bit his arm, and when he released her, she punched him in the face. Taking his surprise further, she kneed him in the groin. He went down like a sack of stones, groaning in agony. She leaned down and kicked him in the face hard. He wasn’t moving post that.

She turned. Karan’s two friends were already on the floor, lying motionless, while Rajiv continued to slam his fist into Karan’s face. Noises and shouts from outside filtered through to her. A dozen or so policemen entered the house. Then, her brother ran inside with another man at his heels. She recognized his friend, ACP VJ Bellani, a second later. She hadn’t met him in a long time, but she did know he was her brother’s closest friend.

Kabier rushed to her. “Are you alright? Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine... I’m fine.”

He pulled her to his chest. “Thank God. I was so worried, Sheena.”

She shifted her head and saw that Rajiv was still pummelling Karan. VJ and the officers had to physically remove Rajiv from Karan. The officers apprehended all the men and took them away.

Rajiv turned. His amber eyes met hers. Those orbs she loved so much were shining with unshed tears. She ran to him and tossed herself in his arms.

“I’m fine,” she assured him. “I’m fine. Nothing happened, okay? You came on time.”

He held her to his chest, put his nose against the side of her neck, and inhaled deeply. Finally, he lifted her off the ground and began carrying her away. “I’m taking you back to Dubai this second. You’re not going to stay here a moment longer.”

“Rajiv, please wait,” Kabier said.

Rajiv threw him a sideways glance. “I don’t want to hear a word of what you have to say. I nearly lost her because of you.”

Rajiv took a step forward, but Sheena held his shoulders. She understood his fear and pain. Her chest still hurt with the knowledge that they’d almost lost one another tonight. Rajiv was as stricken as she was.

She kissed his cheek. “Please, can you put me down?”

“No.”

“Please, I need to talk to my brother.”

“He’s done enough damage. If he hadn’t fought with you, you never would have stepped out of the gate of your house. You would have been safe. What if I hadn’t come on time? What if you were hurt? What if they had hurt you? I can’t…Sheena. I can’t imagine a life without you. You are my world. My reason to breathe. My reason to live.”

A tear dripped down his cheek. Her heart filled with love for this man. She kissed that lone tear away. “If not tonight, then Karan would have targeted me another night. But I’m safe now, and this ordeal is over.”

“Rajiv, please,” Kabier came forward, “We need to talk.”

“Please,” Sheena begged. “You need to talk to him. I love you so much, but he is my brother. He can be difficult and overbearing, but I know he cares about me, and he loves me. Please listen to him.”
