“No problem. The transition is weird for all of us.” Kyla leaned back against some of the cabinets, not seeming like she was in a hurry to go back to her book.

I felt more at ease with her, knowing she felt the same way I did about not wanting a mate. “Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Do you know why Amarok glows?”

Her smile faded a little. “He didn’t tell you?”

“He said he didn’t think I wanted to know. I didn’t—and don’t,” I admitted. “But it seems like it’s probably important.”

“Yeah, the glow is a part of something the guys callthe frenzy. You should probably be glad it’s not affecting you.”

I frowned.

“Basically, the men have magic in their chest that ignites when nature or fate determines it’s the right time. Amy was dating one of the shifters seriously for a month and a half before his magic ignited. When the magic ignites, it takes control of the guy completely, and starts something they call a mate run. The mate run is fueled by the frenzy magic, and it drives him to run to the woman fate has chosen for him. When he reaches her, he bites her. The bite starts the bond, as you know, but the frenzy magic doesn’t fade until the bond has either been sealed by the woman biting him back, or broken by the eclipse.”

I blinked.

“After the guy bites the girl, the frenzy becomes hers as well, and it wraps around her, making her glow too. How much it glows is determined by how attracted they are to each other. Since you’re not glowing, it’s safe for everyone to assume you’re not attracted to Rok, or you at least don’t want him physically.”

I blinked again, a few more times.

Hot damn, that was a lot to take in.

“What happens if I never glow?” I asked her.

She lifted a shoulder. “I don’t know. There’s a decent chance some of the guys will start pursuing you as soon as the bond is broken, if you’re clearly not interested in Rok.”

Shit.

“Ezra told me I’d probably have three months after the eclipse before any of the other guys would try to hit on me.”

Kyla’s lips curved upward. “If the guys agreed to logic, probably.”

But they weren’t logical.

And they all wanted mates, except the dozen who were out in the Woods, waiting for more women to be brought from Earth.

“So if I never glow, they’ll think Rok failed or isn’t right for me.”

“More like they’ll see it as an opportunity to have a chance with you. And some of those bastards are very, very persistent.”

I let out a long breath. “Guess I’m going to have to figure out how to make myself glow.”

“Just be careful with it, if you do. Ezra says that when you glow, you get warm and horny.”

Great.

That was just great.

I made a face, and Kyla laughed. “It’s not so bad. At least we’re not on Earth anymore.”

“That is a very, very good point.” I glanced around the kitchen. “Have you seen any scissors, by chance? I decided I’m going to cut my hair off.”

Her eyebrows shot upward. “Damn, girl. New world, new hair?”

“Something like that.” I flashed her a smile. “Want to help?”
