As difficult as it was to admit, from what I’d seen of Amarok, he was a good man.

And as much as I hated to say so, I was still basically punishing him for it.

He didn’t ask me to stay outside, or request an invitation in when I reached my den. Instead, he simply lifted the sheet of wood and told me to be careful climbing down.

I put the extra clothes I’d grabbed away in the closet, then stepped into the bathroom.

My appearance caught me off guard once again when I saw it.

My hair was so different, and yeah, the hanging long pieces were worse than I’d realized in the bathroom at the women’s den.

But it wasn’t just my hair that was different;Iwas different too.

It was hard to wrap my mind around the reality of my situation, but in truth, everything had changed.

And in this new version of my world, love wasn’t as simple as falling for someone and deciding to make a life with them. Fate was involved, and magic was too.

I may not have thought the same way the shifters did, but they were still intelligent beings with thoughts and emotions. The women I’d spoken with had more than proven that, and from what I gathered, all of them had wolf forms too.

If I continued refusing to really look at Amarok or consider him as a mate, I was going to create issues. Not just for myself, but for the whole pack, from what I’d gathered. The other men would try to pursue me, and he would feel a need to defend his claim on me.

So… I couldn’t keep him at an arm’s length, the way I had been doing. I needed to adjust my expectations and change the way I was living, to fit this new world I’d walked into.

And the only way I could do that was by having a conversation with him. A real, honest one.

One where I listened to what he was saying, and considered us connected in some way, like he did.

I let out a long breath.

I still needed a shower, but if I was going to have a serious conversation with him, it would be easier to do so while he was occupied. Then, I wouldn’t get quite as overwhelmed. Why not ask him to be occupied fixing the random pieces of hair that had refused to work with us?

It felt like a massive decision, but it was settled.

So, I padded back to the ladder and pulled the lever to open the lock. “Are you good at trimming hair?” I called out. Both of us knew damn well that he was the only one up there, waiting for me, so I was obviously speaking to him.

“Passable,”he said.“Better with curly hair than straight. What are you hoping for?”

My mind went back to his gorgeous, dark curls.

Damn, I was good at ignoring him and how attractive he was.

“I just want the long pieces cut to match the rest. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Think you can handle that?”

“Of course. We can do it in the pack’s den.”

“Actually, I’d rather do it in your den, if you’re comfortable with having me there.”

I heard his satisfied rumble from where I stood, and my lips curved upward.

“I would like that tremendously.”

“Perfect. I’m coming up now.”

I climbed up, taking his outstretched hand for assistance as I cleared the top of the ladder. His eyes were smoldering as they met mine.

I gave him a small smile before he released my hand, and we started walking in a direction I hadn’t been before.

“My den is near the center of the pack’s land,” he explained, speaking aloud to me for the first time in what felt like ages. “I’m one of Ivaylo’s betas, and we were responsible for keeping an eye on the pack to watch for anyone who was losing their fight with immis.”
