“A bunch of people run, and one person chases them, trying to tag them.”

“Then yes, like a game of tag. But when you run, it forces my frenzy’s magic to the surface, and I have no choice but to chase you. When I catch you, the magic doesn’t relent until I’ve marked you as mine, beginning the bond again and igniting your frenzy as well, assuming you’re still attracted to me.”

Damn.

“I don’t think the attraction is going anywhere now. It’s not like I can forget that.” I gestured to the bathroom’s counter, and his chest rumbled in satisfaction. “But I’ll be careful not to run from you.”

“It will be easier said than done, soon. You’ll begin to itch with the need to shift, and it will drive you to madness if you ignore it.” His hands continued to move over my back, calming me.

“Well, that’s terrible news.”

He chuckled. “You’ll enjoy being a wolf, Aurora. The power and freedom you will feel is unmatchable.”

My lips curved upward. “You know me too well already.”

“I’ve waited far too long for you not to pay attention when you act and speak.”

“I guess that’s a valid point.” I let out a long breath. “Will my glowing keep the other guys from trying to flirt with me? Your possessiveness will get bad if they do, won’t it?”

“I hope it does,” he said. “And if it doesn’t, we’ll deal with it then.”

“What about your possessiveness?”

“As long as you don’t let my packmates touch you, I’ll manage it.”

I scowled.

His chest rumbled in soft amusement. “You can always start sleeping in my den. Even my most hard-headed packmates couldn’t ignore that as a statement of who you’ve chosen, with or without a mate bond.”

“Do the unmated ladies sleep in their boyfriends’ dens?”

“All except Kyla,” he said.

“Which is why Kyla has multiple guys chasing her?”

“Yes.”

My face warmed as I remembered my thoughts earlier. “Did you ever chase any of the other women?”

“No. I was in the Woods, remember? Waiting for you.” His fingers slid up into the soft strands of my hair, and my eyes closed at the comfort of his touch.

“Right.”

My mind wandered as peaceful silence filled the room, our bodies entirely relaxed against each other.

Eventually, I decided not to hold back the question I’d been considering. “What would happen if I decided I wasn’t interested in mating with you?”

A moment of silence passed.

A long, long moment.

“I would respect your decision, though I would do everything in my power to convince you otherwise.”

“Unless I mated with someone else?”

Another silence followed before he admitted, “If you mated with one of my packmates, I would likely lose my battle to immis. I don’t tell you that in an attempt to manipulate you or force your hand, but in an effort to be honest. You wouldn’t be at fault; I’ve been waiting to find my fated mate for a long time. Finding her and losing her would be my end.”

The peace I’d been feeling slowly faded. I was still relaxed, but nothing was as settled as I had started to feel. Not even a little.
