I actually meant, why did you save me?Not,why didn’t you take me to a hospital?Because I already know why he brought the university doctors here instead.

But I can’t seem to find the courage to ask that outright, so I don’t correct him.

Instead, I swallow and flick a glance towards the closed bedroom door before meeting his gaze again. “Am I a prisoner?”

He holds my gaze in silence for a few seconds before replying, “No.”

I sit up, which sends a flare of pain through my whole body. I suppress a wince and instead nod towards the door. “So if I were to walk up to that door right now, it wouldn’t be locked?”

The chair groans as he abruptly pushes himself to his feet. Striding over to the door, he shoves the handle down and throws the door wide open. Then he steps aside and sweeps his arm, gesturing towards it.

“Go ahead,” he says. “Leave if you want. But those two people will still be looking for you.” His eyes harden as he nods towards the bandages across my torso. “To finish the job. So I would recommend at least waiting until you’re not wincing just from sitting up.”

Surprise flutters through my chest. He noticed that? I thought I suppressed that wince before he could see it.

With his arm motioning towards the door, he stares me down from across the room. Challenge pulses on his face.

Part of me wants to get up and stalk out of here just to spite him. But the problem is that he is right. Going back out there in this condition would not only be reckless, it would be downright stupid.

So I force out a defeated breath and instead scoot backwards so that I can lean my back against the headboard.

A victorious smirk pulls at his lips.

I ignore the way it makes my heart flip.

After closing the door again, he walks back to the chair and drops down on it. It creaks in alarm underneath his muscular frame.

Another short silence descends over the room.

“We didn’t find them,” Rico says after a while. “Derek and Sebastian. Our people searched the area around the park all night, but there was no sign of them.”

I just nod. I didn’t expect there to be. They’re too skilled for that.

“Why didn’t you tell them where I am?” he suddenly asks.

Alarm crackles down my spine. While gripping the sheets hard on the other side of my leg, where he can’t see it, I keep my voice casual as I ask, “What do you mean?”

“They tortured you to get you to give them my location. But you didn’t. Why?”

Fuck. I must have accidentally admitted that sometime last night when I was completely out of it.

There is no way that I can tell him the truth, because I barely even want to admit it to myself, so I lie and say, “Because it would’ve been proof that I let you live six years ago, which would be bad for me.”

“Yeah…” he begins, and shoots me a pointed look. “Except, they already know that.”

I say nothing, because we both know that he’s right and that my answer was a lie.

Thankfully, though, he doesn’t push the matter.

“Do you have anyone else?” he asks instead. “Anyone you can call?”

A sudden wave of embarrassment washes over me, and I avert my gaze before admitting, “No.”

“Then you’re staying.”

I snap my gaze back to his. But it wasn’t a question. Just a simple statement of facts. And he isn’t even waiting around to see if I agree.

Rising to his feet, he starts towards the door without a second look back. I just sit there, watching him in stunned silence as he walks out the door.
