The moment I move, so does the man behind me. Boots pound rapidly against the pavement as he gives chase.

Adrenaline pumps through my veins as I hurtle down the street. Right as I round the next corner, I steal a quick look over my shoulder to see Sebastian race after me.

I let out a curse under my breath as I skid onto the next road.

Why couldn’t it have been Derek? He’s much bigger and bulkier, which makes him slower. But Sebastian is lean and much, much faster.

Empty bottles clink and roll across the uneven stones as I leap over a pile of trash and aim for the other end of the road.

Sebastian rounds the corner behind me.

While trying frantically to call up my mental map of this area, I veer right and sprint down another street. There has to be some place where I can lose him.

The footsteps behind me grow louder. Closer.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

I throw myself around the next corner.

And come face to face with a dead end.

My heart leaps into my throat, but I don’t hesitate.

Picking up speed, I hurtle down the narrow alley and towards the half-rotten wooden crate halfway down. The building on that side is too tall for me to reach the roof, but I might be able to reach the opposite one.

Sebastian closes in with each second.

I push myself to go as fast as I can.

Sprinting down the alley, I leap up onto the edge of the crate and then use my leg to push myself sideways in a rapid jump.

Air whips around my face and rips at my hair as I shoot up and sideways towards the lower roof on the other side.

Even with all of my power behind the jump, my fingers barely reach the edge of the roof.

The rest of my body slams into the stone wall underneath.

My breath escapes my lungs in a huff at the impact.

I drag air back into my lungs while trying to haul myself up as fast as I can.

A hand wraps around my ankle.

Panic surges through me.

I kick instinctively with my other leg.

Sebastian hisses in pain as my heel slams into his nose, and he loses his grip on my ankle for a second.

Yanking my legs back up, I grit my teeth and use every smidgen of my strength to haul myself up onto the roof.

On the ground, Sebastian is already hurrying to duplicate my move with the crate.

With my heart thundering in my chest, I roll over the edge of the slanting roof and jump to my feet before taking off.

Tiles rattle underneath my boots as I run along the edge and towards the next building. It’s the one that makes up the dead end, so if I can just make it there, I should be able to get down to the street on the other side.

A groan sounds behind me. And then the tiles rattle even more as another set of footsteps pound across them. I pick up speed.
