“Kingfisher light,” the first one replies.

“And I’ll have whiskey on the rocks with you by my side,” the other guy says, laughing at his own joke.

“Well, I can definitely get your drinks, but giving you company is out of question,” I reply with a tight smile and a shrug as I take down their orders. “I’ll go get your drinks. Meanwhile, you can have a look at the menu.”

Slightly shaken, I make my way to the counter. The cute young waiter behind the counter looks at me with a polite smile. Returning the smile, I read out my order.

He lifts his eyebrows. “You serving tables?”

He knows who I am. I did come early today when dad had introduced me to all the staff.

“You can say that,” I reply with an awkward chuckle. “I am here to fill in shoes for one of the waitresses.”

“Your dad won’t be happy with this,” he says, reaching down and grabbing a mug.

I nod. “Please don’t tell him about it. It will only add to his stress. It’s just for today,” I urge as I watch him work with my order.

“Chill. I won’t tell him. Please be careful. Though we don’t get many inappropriate customers, at times, people tend to misbehave.” He nods as he places the drinks on the tray.

“Thanks, I will be careful,” I reply, cautiously lifting the tray up off the counter.

I head back to my table, deliver their drinks, and take their orders, check on my first table, and find a third table being seated. And this is how the next forty minutes go.

Finally, my shift comes to an end. Come to think of it, I was able to manage my tables easily. Lisa did keep checking on me and lending a helping hand here and there. She was also hesitant about me serving but I assured her that it’s no problem. In fact, I am glad I took the offer as it gave an insight into the bar. The first-hand experience will make it easy for me to work on my plans, which I have for bringing in more customers.

Taking my belongings, I slip through the back door into my car. I am dead on my feet and I don’t bother changing my dress. As I get behind the steering wheel, I find myself pulling my phone out of my bag and glancing at my wallpaper. It’s of my parents which we clicked a few months back. We three are smiling widely at the camera. Just one look at it, and I feel all the tiredness of the day vanishes away. A smile plays on my lips when I caress their faces on my screen. They are my pillars of strength and the ones to give me the courage to battle obstacles in life.

It’s already quite late. So, instead of calling, I drop a message to Dad. ‘I am on my way back. All good at the bar. Talk to you in the morning. Good night.’

That’s when I notice Ranveer’s missed calls and messages. Oh gosh! Amidst all this, I got so busy that I didn’t get a chance to check my mobile or inform Ranveer that I will be late. Anyway, I am on my way back and will reach in some time. Might as well talk to him then if he happens to be awake.

Chapter 19

Ranveer

Marriage has made me a lot merrier than I expected it to. I have been floating on cloud nine ever since Alisha has become a part of my life. There is no mistake that I’m deeply in love with my wife, and I thank my grandpa for her every day. I feel a smile creep on my lips when my mind ponders over the breakfast we had together this morning.

I remember her tiptoeing out of her room at eight in the morning. I bet she must be trying her best to not disturb me. Little does she know how her thoughts make me restless day and night, depriving me of my sleep. Damn! She needs to get out of my thoughts and into my arms where she belongs.

She tiptoed to the kitchen, wearing her formal jumpsuit. Dressed in my work clothes, I sneaked behind her and made my way to the kitchen. I stopped a few steps away from her and saw her searching for something in the cupboard. A ghost smile tugged at my lips as I decided to surprise her. Cautiously, I sauntered towards her.

“Looking for something?” I whispered in her ear, making her jump.

She turned around with a hand on her heart. “Sorry. Did I wake you up?” she asked, her eyes still wide in shock, while blush started crawling on her face.

“No, you didn’t. I have an early breakfast meeting with one of my clients.”

“Oh... I didn’t know, I thought we… I mean… we could….” she stuttered. The effect I was having on her pleased me. She averted her eyes and took a step back, which made me take a step forward and stand a hand distance away from her. I wanted to close the distance between us, but I refrained from giving in to my urges.

I arched an eyebrow and knowing what must be on her mind, said, “Come, let’s have breakfast together. The cook already prepared it and left.”

Her eyes instantly shot up. She was studying my face with a surprised look. “Didn’t you say you have a breakfast meeting?”

“I do but I want to start my day with my wife, and what better way than eating together?”

Her cheeks turned red as she nodded her head. “Okay.”

“I’ll set our plates. Why don’t you prepare coffee?” I suggested as I rounded the counter, plated breakfast for both of us, and placed them on the table.
