“So, tell me something about yourself.” I initiate a friendly conversation.
His gaze meets mine. “Well, I have not much to say. I am pretty much an open, simple, boring book. I have a nine to five job back in Australia, not much of a party animal. I am more of a family man, and that’s the reason I come down to meet my parents as and when I get time.” He then gives a lopsided grin as he adds, “Not to mention, I have one more name added to my list, which gives me reason to make my travel even more frequent.”
“You both look cute together,” I say, and he shoots me a grin.
“I think I got lucky there. I mean, who would have guessed that this visit of mine would make me meet the girl of my destiny?”
“You for sure lucked out and found a wonderful woman.” I smile into my glass before tipping it back. His words relax me slightly. His feelings for Rewa seem genuine and real. Case in point — Alisha has nothing to worry about. This man looks like the type of guy who would make a good companion.
“What about Alisha and you?” he asks, and my lips twist with a smile and my heart jumps. Two things that bode well for me whenever I hear Alisha’s name.
“What do I say about that? Sometimes I feel like I’m living in a dream, but then I realise it’s all real and I’m one lucky bastard in this world to have someone like Alisha by my side. Marrying her has definitely made me a better person,” I say with all honesty.
He nods his head. “It’s funny how we men can go through life, thinking we are complete until we fall in love with the woman of our dreams. Now I worry about how will I make myself go back to Australia, leaving her behind. I am thinking….” He is about to say something, but then he shuts his mouth as they hear the girls call out. A second later, the door opens and the girls come in.
“I really hope you guys are hungry. We made some garlic cheese bread and nachos,” Rewa says, placing the plates in front of us.
“Starving,” Jai grins as he pulls Rewa onto his lap and kisses the side of her head.
“What have you guys been talking about?” She motions between Jai and me.
He grins at her, shaking his head. “Nothing for you to know, Beautiful. It’s boys’ secret.”
Rewa rolls her eyes at him. “Ya right, you guys sure can gossip more than we girls do.”
“Well, how about we join your little tittle-tattle?” Alisha asks, dropping a plate with chips on the table before she comes over and tucks herself under my arm.
Jai places his fingers on his chin as if giving it a thought. “I guess you girls can join us, provided you keep our plates full with the yummy food.”
We all burst out laughing as we fall into a normal conversation.
“Alisha, is that your ringtone?” Rewa asks.
“Yes,” Alisha looks at her and then turns to me. “I’ll just go and check who is it.”
Once she steps out of the room, I raise a brow at Rewa, who I find staring at me. “Any issue?”
“I have never seen Alisha this happy as she is with you. You’d better not hurt my friend.”
“I can never dream of it,” I say, my face sombre. Right then, Alisha walks in. I notice a change in her countenance. “All good?”
“Yeah, nothing important.”
There is a slight hesitation in her voice, but I don’t question her. Instead, I pull her down to sit on my lap. She doesn’t shy away; rather, she gets cosy. We all fall back into our talks with ease.
Time passes quickly. Before we realise, it’s almost midnight. Alisha and I stand at the door and wave goodbye to Rewa and Jai. I lead her back into the house and shut the door.
Letting out a sigh, we head towards our room. “It was definitely a great night.”
Alisha nods. “They both look good together.”
“They do.” I agree. Finally, some tension seems to slip off her face about Jai. “Maybe we can try and get together more often.”
“You were right in inviting them. It was exactly what I needed.”
I smile, and slowly move towards her. Standing in front of her, I cup her face when her phone starts ringing.
“Let me see who it is.” She kisses me on my nose and turns to the bedside table where her mobile is lying.
