Still, she gives me a weak smile. “Yeah, I fell down the stairs, but it is nothing to worry about. I am fine,” she sniffs.

I don’t know why I can’t make myself believe her words. Something doesn’t fit here. I look around the room. Seeing Ranveer still standing near the door, I give him a tight smile. I am about to ask him to check with the doctor on Rewa’s report when there is a slight knock at the door and it opens. My eyes fall on the doctor, who steps in. I recognise him immediately. He is the same doctor who checked me when the incident happened at my boutique.

“Morning, Doctor.” I smile at him.

Ranveer glares at the doctor. “You are the doctor on duty?”

The doctor gives him a frown. “Unfortunately, yes I am.” He then turns his attention to me as he walks past Ranveer and stands on the other side of Rewa’s bed. “I didn’t know I would get to meet your fiancée again.”

“I am her husband, not fiancée, Doctor,” Ranveer corrects him as he walks to my side and wraps his hand around my shoulder.

“Doctor, you don’t have to worry, Ranveer promised to be at his best behaviour.” I smile at the doctor before glaring at my fuming husband.

“I made no such promise,” Ranveer answers, gritting his teeth.

God, how I want to throat punch him! I will handle him later. Right now, I need to check on Rewa. “Doctor, how is Rewa?”

“Let me check,” he says, as he pulls the charts and begins to read. Once he is done reading, he looks down at Rewa. “How are you feeling?” he inquires, putting down the chart.

“Doctor, I am fine. It was just a small accident. I doubt if you need to even check. I am good to go home.” Rewa gives a nervous smile.

What is she trying to hide? What’s the matter? Why is she so hesitant about the doctor checking her? It’s been six months since we had dinner together at my place. Since then, I have been seeing small changes in Rewa, but I couldn’t figure out what exactly it was. Every time I would try talking, she would brush me off.

“Now that you have been admitted, it’s my duty to examine you, before I can discharge you,” the doctor says, to which Rewa nods her head though the reluctance is evident. “Let me check the bump on your head.”

“Okay,” she murmurs.

The doctor presses his finger on her head where the bump is, and she hisses. “Ouch!”

“The bump is nasty no doubt, but it’s superficial,” the doctor says, getting a little torch from his pocket. He flashes the light in her eye, asking her to look to the left and then to the right. “Good,” he says as turns off the light and slips it back into his pocket. “She has a mild concussion. But nothing to worry about. I will prescribe some painkillers which will help. I would like to keep her under observation till evening, after which she is free to go home. You can call the nurse if there is anything. Also, the hospital policy is only one visitor with the patient,” he says, giving Ranveer a curt nod before he walks out of the room.

I turn to Ranveer and suggest, “Ranveer, why don’t you go to the office and I stay with Rewa till she is not discharged?”

“But…” Ranveer looks at me in shock and is about to say something but I cut him off.

“Please, I want some time with Rewa,” I urge. “You can pick us up when she is being discharged. I promise we won’t step out of the hospital till you don’t come and get us.”

Ranveer glances from Rewa to me.“Okay, I’ll give you this. Just give me a call if you need me,” he says, to which I nod. He looks at Rewa and gives her a small smile. “Take care, Rewa.” He then turns to me and kisses my forehead before heading to the door.

I watch Ranveer step out, and then turn to face Rewa. I pull a chair next to her bed and take her hands in mine. “Now tell me the truth. No more bullshit lies.”

She slightly grins. “You are always good at catching if anything is fishy.” Her smile fades. “I wish I would have paid heed to your warnings about Jai.”

“It’s him?” I lean forward, my eyes wide with shock.

She nods her head, unable to meet my gaze and lowers her eyes. “Yes.” Her voice is almost a whisper as she says, “He hurt me.”

“What did he do? And for how long has this been going on? Please don’t lie to me this time. Please talk to me.” I clutch at her hand, my eyes harrowed thinking what all has she been suffering.

She takes a deep breath and looks into my eyes. “He hit me.”

“What?” My mouth goes wide open as I stare at her.

She gulps a lump down her throat and nods, as a pained expression crosses her face. “The first time he hit me was when I was talking to one of my male college friends. We got into a fight after that, and I wanted to end things with him at that very moment, but he apologised for his mistake, saying he was drunk and didn’t know what he was doing.” She lowers her gaze as she fiddles with her blue hospital gown as she tries to gain some semblance. Her voice quivers as she continues, “Like a fool, I gave him a chance, thinking that everyone does deserve a second chance. I brushed it off, assuming it must be baseless jealousy and his short-tempered nature, which he will overcome, but I was wrong.” She closes her eyes for a moment, and when she opens them again, I see them red. I can feel my heart constrict as she continues in a hollow voice. “After that, things were going smoothly for us for a few days until the next time he raised his hands. It was when I came home late after having dinner with my aunt. I lost my temper and decided that day I would not take this anymore and would leave him for good, but he showed me a few unauthorised videos of us which he took and started blackmailing me that if I leave him or report him, then he will leak those videos on the internet.” She then bursts out crying. “I can’t let that happen. My parents can’t see those videos. They will die with shame.”

I close my eyes and feel my tears pool in my eyes. Seeing her break down like this, tears begin rolling down my face. “Why did you go through all this alone? Why didn’t you tell me anything?”

With a shaky voice, she murmurs, “Because I didn’t want to pull you in my mess.”
