“Yeah, that works.”

He sorted our trash and recycling into the right bins then held the door for me. “Where are you parked?”

“Halfway down the block.”

He walked with me, his hand lightly touching my lower back. At my car, he held the door while I slid in, then came around to the passenger side and tapped on the window. I lowered it. Aithan rested his arm on the frame. “I’m looking forward to seeing you again, Zelda. You look amazing today.”

I tucked my hair behind my ears and smiled. “Thanks, Aithan. You always look amazing.”

He smiled and stepped back. “Bye, beautiful,” he said then strode down the block, hands in his jacket pockets.

I couldn’t stop a shit-eating grin from splitting my face. “Fuck, that’s hot.” I watched him go. “Wonder what it’s like to see him cum.” I shook my head at my own horniness. But some urges just couldn’t be helped, and Aithan Mazur triggered all my naughtiest ones.

ALL THE NEGATIVE VOICES

A textfrom my mom chimed my phone as I got home.

How are you holding up?

Fine. Drew’s in town & we’ve been hanging out.

Your father told me you got Tristan’s stuff out of your house. That was fast. Maybe too fast, honey?

No. Not too fast. He was a dick. Don’t start thinking like Greer.

What do you mean?

Like I’ve made a mistake. I didn’t. I don’t need a man in my life if he’s just gonna treat me like dirt.

I’d thought about what Aithan had said and he was right, Tristan should know better than to tear me down.

Well, if you’re sure you’re making the right decision, I’ll support you. You know I love you.

I know, Mom. Thx. I’ll talk to u later.

Drew was at his book signing, so I had the place to myself. I thought about rerecording the two chapters of his book, but decided to listen to them again instead. I got my computer and flopped down on the couch in the living room. Opening the file I cued up the last five chapters and hit play. He was right, everything was fine until those last two. They had no spark. It was as if Juno Galore had deflated under the weight of my emotions.

Even as I listened to the chapters I heard the bitterness in my voice. Why had Tristan been such a turd?

“And why was I so damn patient and stupid?”

Lulu jumped on my lap and started making bread with her front paws. I ran my fingers through her fur. “You don’t know either do you?”

I’d gained so much confidence with the success of my business, but obviously that self-assurance hadn’t extended into my personal life or my self-image. If I truly had confidence in myself I wouldn’t have put up with Tristan’s bullshit for so long. He never took me to any of the events at Blue Water. He didn’t take me to his Ultimate games or invite me to cheer him on at his ultras. He always said he didn’t like being watched when he was competing, that he found it distracting. But that was a lie.

“He kept me away because I didn’t look like the sexy, fit girlfriend he thought a trainer should date, Lu.”

There were other problems I’d ignored. He stopped complimenting me. He never bought me gifts, not even for my birthday or Christmas. He didn’t know when our anniversary was and never seemed to care either.

Quite frankly, Tristan was a shitty boyfriend.

Okay. Fine. But why did I tolerate him?

“Drew was right,” I said. “I thought I didn’t deserve love because I believed the people who said I’m fat and ugly.”

The room blurred as tears filled my eyes and spilled down my cheeks. “Fuck,” I muttered and wiped them away.
